A Productive Day in the Garden
Yesterday was a good one in our yard. We finally have things started for our vegetable garden. Douglas started out the day with a trip to Home Depot. He found out that old bicycle tubes can be useful.
The lumber is for two new beds that we are putting in. We decided that the front one will be 8′ x 4′ and the back one will be 6′ x 2′. Those will be assembled in the next couple of days.
The first thing that I did when I got home was to take some pictures of the incredible blooms we are currently enjoying.
The yard looks spectacular. I love spring!
Our town has a garden Facebook page, and this week we got some wild arugula and an ostrich fern for free. The arugula will go in one of the new beds.
The neighbor planted the fern for me. We have been enjoying filling this bed now that the tree is gone. He is hoping to attract some humming birds, and we do not disagree.
The next order of business was to get my seedling plants in the ground. These were my tools. The iPad is showing a picture of a square foot garden plan. I also found this site most helpful for planning my layout.
I probably should have let some of the plants get a little bigger, but I going away for several days, and I thought that they would have a better chance of surviving outside. I do not want to ask someone else to be responsible for watering them.
This little cutie helped me in the garden. I love that she is not scared of the camera any more.
The bed is looking sparse, but it will fill in quickly. I need to purchase some more plants.
Lastly, I planted these two little perennials that were my Mother’s Day gifts from Kahlua and Crème. They are adorable.
This is only the beginning! Check back for more progress.
Happy Homemaking!
wow, love the new plants! and what a great picture of kahlua!!! so glad to see her coming more and more out of her shell 🙂
She is such a sweety, but not many people know because she’s so shy. It is great to see her overcoming her fear.
So many great plants plus a copacetic neighbor. We’re square foot gardeners, too, and have found it a very productive system with no thinning necessary. Charlie was unable to bring himself to throw away the thinnings in a traditional garden so we had to go the square-foot route otherwise who would eat 3000 beets? Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
I don’t like too thin either. It just seems so wasteful.
We need to check out square foot gardening. Eric will be planting the veggies this weekend. He’s not good at thinning, either. Kahlua looks so sweet … what a pretty smile! Did I see dandelions behind her? 🙂
I tend to over plant, not thin and therefore not have much success. I am hoping to do better this year.
Your garden looks gorgeous at spring!
