House Tour 2018-2023 Recorrido de la casa

It has been my tradition to post a house tour at the beginning of August to commemorate my blogiversary or the anniversary of starting this blog. The last house tour took place in 2018 because after that we moved to The Pink House. I am excited to renew the tradition. For the first time ever, the tour will include both floors, since we took over the upstairs apartment. Most of these pictures were taken in May, so a few things have changed since then, but I have not had the time to take new pictures. I am sure you will forgive me. I am going to include the pictures from both 2018 and 2023 for comparison. The top (and prettier!) picture will be from 2018.

The Front of House 2018

Here is the front of the house in 2018 and 2023. You can see that the cherry tree and rose bushes have gotten a lot bigger. There are also a lot more weeds in the front garden. I have been working on that this summer, but there is still more work to be done. Things are taking longer than I planned because I keep getting poison ivy.

Here is the front entryway. The biggest change here is that there is no longer a door at the top of the stairs. We still have not removed the door at the bottom of the stairs, because, at some point, we are going to take out the paneling and repaint the stairwell. Until then, I want to be able to close it off.

Almost everything in here is different. We bought a lot of new furniture for the Pink House. We also got a piano. The old blinds fell apart and we still have not unpacked the curtains. For those of you who are wondering, the big, circular, purple couch now lives with my brother and his family.

The hallway is one area that looks pretty much the same as it did. That strip of wood between the closet and bedroom door moved with us to the Pink House and back again. It has a lot more written on it, since we use it to track the boys’ growth as well as the height of their cousins. They were so little when we moved.

Hallway 2018

The primary bedroom is a mess. We are still unpacking and organizing belongings. We are using sheets as curtains and none of the artwork has been hung up yet. There are even more changes that you cannot see on the other side of the room. We moved the wardrobe upstairs to what will be the family room, and we have two dressers over there now. I hope to make some progress in here soon.

La habitación principal es un caos. Todavía estamos desembalando y organizando nuestros bienes.

This room is no longer the boys’ bedroom. They now have a bedroom upstairs, but they still refuse to sleep up there far from Douglas and me. For now they are sleeping here in what will eventually just be a guest room. Once again, there is no artwork and things are unorganized.

Finally, we encounter a room that looks better now. We fixed the wall and the ceiling for the tenants after we moved to the Pink House. Unfortunately, we had to add the litter box. Also the shower curtain has since been replaced, but I don’t have a recent picture.

Bathroom 2018
Bathroom May 2023

Here in the dining room, the bench, the table and the chairs are the same. We still have my grandparent’s light fixture that I hope to return soon. I found the dresser in the trash, and we bought the stereo a few years ago new. I need to replace the blind and hang some art. At least Ponche is still around.

Dining Room 2018
Dining Room May 2023

The kitchen has not changed much, since all of the furniture in here stayed here when we moved. The statues on the refrigerator came from the trash. We did change the light fixture, which you cannot see in the picture. I am planning to put the fixtures from my grandparents’ house in here. The one that used to be in the dining room in 2018 and its companion lamp. I am still deciding where the light fixture from the picture (2018) is going to go. We also need to put some things back on the walls.

Now for the first time in house tour history, we are going to go upstairs. You can see what the upstairs looked like when I bought the house here. That was time I did a full tour of the upstairs. There were a couple of other posts about renovations up there, here and here. At the top of the stairs to the left is what used to be the kitchen. It is now the boys bedroom, and you can read more about how it became their bedroom here. I painted it blue, which is the color that they picked out. All of the furniture in here is new. The plan is to put in a wardrobe for the oldest boy and paint and add shelves to the existing closet for the younger one. That will allow us to get rid of the clothes rack. I am also going to hang galaxy tapestries on the walls. I have just about given up hope that they will ever keep this room clean, so it is probably not going to ever look much better than this.

Boy's Room May 2023

Here is the hallway as seen from the doorway of the boys’ bedroom. The first door on the left is the bathroom. The second door on the left is a linen closet. The room is front is going to be the family room, and the door on the left goes back downstairs. The hallway needs painted, and the light fixture will be replaced. I will also hang some art in here.

Upstairs Hallway May 2023

Let me present to you the upstairs bathroom! Although it does not look very good right now, we are so happy to have a second bathroom that we do not care. Someday, it will look prettier, but for now it is not awful and it is clean, so I am happy.

This was the family room back in May, while we were still painting. I am happy to say that we finished painting and were able to bring in the furniture. We are still getting everything set up, but I hope to be able to give you an update soon.

Family Room May 2023

Now back to our regularly scheduled tour. The back porch looked so pretty in 2018. Here is a picture from May. It looks much worse now, so I am glad that I do not have an updated photo. Right now the porch is a catch all for things that do not yet have a home in our house. We are valiantly trying to organize and get rid of everything that we do not need or have room for, but it is an enormous task.

Ahora volvamos a nuestro recorrido traditional.

In 2018, I wrote that our back yard had been neglected. Looking at it now, it looks like paradise to me. We had gardens, places to sit, a tree, clotheslines. It did not look like the back yard from an episode of Hoarders. There is so much work to be done in the back yard right now that I despair that it will ever look good again! We certainly have our work cut out for us.

Looking back on how beautiful our home was in 2018 gives me hope that someday it will look that good again. I hope that the horrible current pictures do not scare you away forever. I need support if I am going to keep posting! If you would like to see some other tours, here are the ones from 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018. Also if you are interested in watching slide shows of the rooms from year to year, you can visit the Home Tour Page.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. You can read about my projects on my blog www.CapeofDreams.com

  1. It’s a daunting task to move and it gets harder the older we get. You know what it can be so you have that goal in mind with new improvements that age and wisdom and reality bring. Slow but sure and you WILL get there.

  2. Whew, I am worn out reading about all the projects you have going! You will get there! Remember, when you first moved to Cape of Dreams, you didn’t have kids. I have lived in my bungalow for a whopping 39 years (!!), and I can’t even imagine moving. We have SO MUCH stuff. One of these years we will have to because we’ll get too old to take care of an old house. This summer we are busy building a bigger greenhouse, so the yard is a construction zone. My landscaping looks like heck, too. Have patience, it’ll all happen in time!

    • 39 years is impressive! The greenhouse sounds exciting. I would love to visit you one day before you move. I’ve still never been to Washington State!

  3. It’s getting there, but lots to do yet I see. Hang in there; it will be worth it! One big plus I notice: you now have 2 bathrooms! Even with just two of us, having a second bathroom would be nice!
Keep posting. John and I will probably not ever be able to see it in person. Love and prayers to you all

    • Two bathrooms make all the difference in the world. Despite all the work left to do, we are happy that we moved back here. We do wish you could visit! Sending love back to you.

  4. I love a good before/after post — I’m going to label this one before/during — I’m sure the after will be magnificent. BTW I really like the upstairs bathroom.

    • It is definitely a before and during. We probably won’t ever be done! What color do you think I should paint the bathroom? I’m leaning towards pink.

  5. It’s going to look fantastic again! It’s such a wonderful house and lends well to decorating. Do you still have your family room in the basement? Where Crème used to climb the sisal posts? I look forward to seeing how the Cape of Dreams continues to evolve and shine 🙂

    • Thank you! We do love this house. Unfortunately, our basement is now completely full of crap. We do have a family room upstairs that I will try to post about soon. The cats still climb around in the basement, and they seem to appreciate that they have more places to climb with all of the boxes and furniture stored there.
