A Puppy with a Foot Fetish
Kahlua has been with us for almost two years. When we first got her, she was extremely ill and nearly did not make it. If you have not read it yet, you should read “How to Refinish a Dog,” the story of how she came to be ours. It brings tears to my eyes every time I read it.
Lately, however, I have been laughing a lot more than I am crying, which is wonderful. Kahlua is healthy and has really been coming out of her shell. She is learning how to play with Crème and with us, and she will come out of the bedroom to greet guests.
She does have one peculiarity that has been cropping up more frequently. She has a fetish. For slippers. She does not care for shoes or socks or any other footwear. This began when we first got her. I would find my slippers in her bed for no reason.
Then, one time, I caught her carrying my slipper right past me through the living room and into the bedroom! I really wish I had a picture of that, but she refused to be photographed.
Often, she will go long periods of time without touching the slippers. However, when I came home from Florida, I found all of my slippers in her bed.
I always take my slippers off at the door to put on my shoes before I leave. I am a bit ashamed of how it normally looks here and need to find a better solution.
Sometimes when I come home the slippers are no longer there. I never know where they might be… maybe in the living room?
In the past, she only carried my slippers around. She would completely ignore Douglas’ footwear, but then again he did not have slippers. For Christmas, I bought him slippers. She ignored them, preferring mine as always. Then he went away for a weekend. He left last Friday and was gone for four days. We arrived home at the same time yesterday. All of our slippers were missing from beside the door. This is what we found in the living room.
I was amazed that I was able to get her to pose for a picture with the objects of her desire. Doesn’t she look guilty?!
I guess we are going to have to learn to live with her addiction. Are there anonymous groups for dogs?
Update: Of course, the very day that I post about her slipper fetish and state that she NEVER goes for shoes, Douglas comes home to find a shoe in the living room. I guess she read my post and decided to show me up!
Happy Homemaking!
Awww … look at that sweet face! I just want to hug her (but maybe she wouldn’t like that). My old boxer Paisley used to bring my shoes out and arrange them in the dining room while I was at work. This made me think of her! What would we do without our fur babies!
She says to tell you she would let you hug her. She heard from me that you’re good people. I love how each animal has their own particular brand of quirkiness. Adorable!
So cute that she takes them and doesn’t chew them. I once had a dog that ate the buttons off my nightgowns but that was a boy-dog. Hmm. . . Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
I am soooooo glad that she does not chew on them. I was going to mention that fact in the post, but I was afraid that would jinx it and she would start! I guess I am too superstitious!
So funny…
B.T.W. Not saying you have stinky pinkies, but I think shoes and slippers smell the most like us out of anything, she might find your smell really comforting when you guys are not around.
When my fur baby was being weaned before she came to our house from her doggie mother, we put pairs of our worn socks with her, when she finally came home, there were no separation issues and she slept really well from day one – I’d like to think it had an affect as our smell was so strong on the socks.
How could you say that about my feet?! Just kidding. I think it is true that there is a strong scent there. She obviously likes it, so it can’t be that bad, right? 😉
