An End of Summer Trip
On Thursday we took Alex back home to Boston. We hope that it was an enjoyable summer for him, but more importantly we hope that his time spent with Douglas in particular has taught him how to be a better man.
We spent the night with him and his mother and on our way out of town in the morning I snapped this picture from the road a couple of blocks from their house. Is that not the most awesome view of Boston?
Douglas and I have not had much time with each other this summer. We desperately needed to reacquaint ourselves as a couple and thus rather than heading straight home, we turned north. Our first stop was Hampton, New Hampshire to have lunch with a friend.
It was our first time on the New Hampshire coast. In fact, like most people we were unaware that New Hampshire even had a coast. It does, and it is beautiful, even on a grey cloudy day.
Can you guess where we went from there? If you need a hint you should check out my New Year’s Resolutions.
We went to Maine!!!!!! Just one more state that I have now checked off my list, forty five down and only five to go.
Maine is marvelous, darling, simply marvelous. If you have not yet been, you need to go, post haste.
Upon arriving, we wandered for a time while deciding where we wanted to go. We were unsure whether to venture inland or stick to the coast.
We decided that for this trip, we would stay along the sea. It is the more trafficked area, but we are still glad that we made that decision. I can never get enough of the ocean.
We were also able to visit some of Maine’s iconic lighthouses.
We also ate a lot of lobster and other awesome seafood.
Whenever possible we ate at little shacks along the road. Douglas made a friend at one.
This summer was a bad one for our bank account. We spent a lot more money than we should have. It turns out that feeding a teenage boy is costly! Who knew? We needed to stop hemorrhaging money and almost cancelled the trip altogether. In the end we decided that we could afford it if we camped.
It was the best decision. We stayed in two beautiful campgrounds with views of a lake and a river. We ended the day beside a campfire and were awoken by the sounds of loons.
Both Douglas and I had camped often in the past, but this was our first camping trip as a couple.
We spent the days just tooling around stopping at whatever caught our eye.
I hope that we can return again next summer and spend more time. It is my dearest dream to someday own a Bed and Breakfast, and this would be the perfect place to do so. In fact, since we returned home, I searched online and found several for sale! Unfortunately, we need about ten more years for our nest egg to grow enough for this dream to become a reality, but someday I will return!
Here are a few more pictures.
Happy Travels!
What a wonderful summer you 2 (3 including Alex) had. Thanks for sharing your adventures. I hope to make it back up to the East coast at some time. It is a beautiful area.
Cheers
Thank you! Come visit any time.
2nding what she said. I’ll make sure to have something good on tap.
Beautiful photos!! It looks like you two had a wonderful and romantic trip to Maine. You two are just as adorable together today as you were at your wedding. We are so lucky to have spent some time with you this summer.
Kinda wondering what kid you brought back home. While doing some sight seeing this weekend Alex offered to open my car door.
Luvs ya’ to bits and pieces!
Alex must appreciate you more after spending time with me! I am thrilled that you see positive changes and am excited to see how cross country season goes for him. Keep in touch!
What a nice trip! Eric’s kids wound up living in Maine when their mom remarried, so Eric and I go back there often–although the kids are grown and scattered now. We love the Maine coast! Those lobster pounds!
It is a great state! I would love an excuse to visit more regularly. Now I am looking forward to visiting Oregon. Maybe we can get together when I do.
Beautiful pictures! I’m glad you were able to visit one more state!
Thank you! This country is huge so getting to them all is quite a challenge.
I’m so glad you got to go to Maine! Doug makes a beautiful butterfly as well, fly Doug, Fly!
Douglas is going to invent the quadrathalon: swimming, biking, running and flying. Maine is awesome. I was all set to buy my bed and breakfast. I even found the perfect spot. Only the funds were lacking.
I’m so glad you got to Maine – your photos captured the essence of that state – it’s different than any other place I’ve been. I’ve been there more times than I can count and love it every time. When I first read that you headed up to the NH coast I was like “OMG I hope she got up to Maine, since there’s only 7 miles of NH coastline!” – you can basically see Maine from NH!
I am glad I got there as well. We already have plans to go back!
