Another Gorgeous Fall Weekend
The weather these past couple of months has been phenomenal. It is hard to believe that it is already the middle of October because we are still walking around outside without jackets. Sunday was another of the gorgeous autumn days that we have had this fall. It was one of those afternoons when you just want to be outside. Douglas and I were extremely productive raking the leaves and cleaning up the garden.
Here is the before picture. The goldenrod in the front bed was a bit past its prime and needed to be trimmed. Now that the tree has come down in the back yard, I am planning to move the golden rod back there next year. It is great for the bees, but it is a little overpowering in that small space.
I took a break to make a scarecrow. I was not planning to make one this year, but raking the leaves brought out my desire for one.
You may remember some of mine from the past, like this one or the other. This year, I forewent the bicycle and put the torso on one chair and the legs on another. I am thinking about putting a head, hands and feet in the wagon. What do you think? Good idea?
The yard was looking pretty good when we finished.
I really love these asters. I planted them two years ago, and they have been spectacular every fall since. Purple is pretty.
While we were working the laundry was drying on the line. It always smells so much better when it dries outside. I am loving that it is still possible for them to dry in the breeze. Douglas was frustrated that they kept wrapping themselves around the line because the winds were so high.
We also spent some time harvesting more produce from the garden. Another shocking occurrence at this time of year. For example the raspberry bush is really confused about what season it is. There are not enough to use for a recipe, but they are tasty when eaten straight off the bush.
Douglas picked green beans. He got a huge bowl full, and that does not even seem to be the end of them. Some of these are not fit to be eaten, but I will dry those and use them to seed next spring.
I gathered more quince. I already made one large jar of quince jam and am planning to make more. It was my first foray into making marmalade, and it was a success, if I do say so myself.
We also may have eggplants soon. There are two that are looking good.
I hope that you all had a great weekend as well.
Happy Homemaking!
Your house has tremendous curb appeal – I haven’t been inside yet.
I envy you the gorgeous flowers, veggies and berries. We are on voluntary water restrictions here and my garden is looking pretty bad. Some people are continuing to water, but I just can’t justify using the water.
I am way behind in reading my favorite blogs due to health issues so I am just going to read your latest for today, but I will be back.
Thanks for visiting me and introducing yourself.
Hi Carol, Thank you so much for stopping by! I am so glad that we do not have any water restrictions here. It did not rain much this summer, but I tried to use mostly water from our rain barrel to water and not use the hose. I have not had to water at all since August. We have been really fortunate. I will send positive thoughts and prayers on your way to recovery.
Your yard looks lots better than ours! The weeds took over this summer. And now we’re into the rainy weather when it gets hard to find that LAST opportunity to mow. Your veggies did well this year! Way to grow! 🙂
We cannot take much credit for the yard looking so good as we have not had to do much lately. The weather has been perfect and so everything stays nice.
We did better with the veggies this year, but there is still room for improvement next year.
We’re blessed with the same weather as you and today I was also annoyed by the wind playing with my laundry! Your house looks really inviting with your adorable garden.
So glad to hear you are enjoying nice weather as well. The wind is one detriment to hanging the laundry outside, but I will always believe that it is worth it!
