Belgrano, Argentina

I am finally returning to my Argentinian blog series. If you need to catch up, you can learn about the reason for my visit and tour Sofi’s apartment, where I stayed while in Buenos Aires. Today I am going to show you the neighborhood of Belgrano. After I arrived Sofi gave me a tour of her ‘hood. Here are some things that caught my eye.

Después de llegar Sofi me dio un tour de su barrio. Aquí están algunas de las cosas que me llamaron la atención.

At one point we had to cross some train tracks. Don’t worry; the train was stopped, but they were pretty slow anyway.

En un momento tuvimos que cruzar los rieles del tren. No te preocupes; el tren estaba parado, pero era muy lento de todos modos.

I really liked this church. Stone buildings are typically beautiful, but I found the stone and brick combination on this one particularly striking. Isn’t it unique?

Me gustaba la arquitectura de esta iglesia. Los edificios de piedra siempre son bonitos, pero la combinación de piedra y ladrilla es particularmente bella. Es muy única, ¿no?

Atop the pedestal is General Manuel Belgrano for whom the neighborhood is named. He was a hero in the war for independence from Spain and a founding father of Argentina. Unfortunately, his name gained worldwide recognition in the twentieth century when a cruiser named after him was sunk by the British in the Falkland War.

Arriba del pedestal está el General Manuel Belgrano, por quien se nombró el vecindario. Era un héroe de la guerra de independencia de España y uno de los fundadores de Argentina. Desafortunadamente, su nombró ganó fama en el Siglo XX cuando el crucero Belgrano se hundió después de un ataque por los británicos en la Guerra de las Malvinas.

On the other side of the Plaza Belgrano is the Sarmiento Museum. I will give you a tour of this building on another day.

Al otro lado de la Plaza Belgrano está el museo Sarmiento. Te daré un tour del museo en otro día.

We also walked through Chinatown. It is small, but interesting.

También pasamos por el Barrio Chino. Es pequeño, pero interesante.

I liked the graffiti on the walls.

Me gustaba el grafiti en las paredes.

That bird was across the street from this mosaic. This inspired me to get back to work on my own mosaic. Of course, I have yet to do so, but the idea has been percolating. I just need to get back into the school routine so that I can re-start.

Ese pájaro estaba al otro lado de la calle de este mosaico. Esto me inspiró a volver a trabajar en mi propio mosaico. Por supuesto, no he hecho nada, pero la idea ha estado percollando. Sólo necesito volver al ritmo de las clases para empezar de nuevo.

I covet this light fixture. I know that we just bought one for the front door, but I would trade it in a nanosecond for this butterfly fixture. It is too awesome that the light bulbs are eyeballs. I do not know if my life will be complete until I find one.

Codicio este aparato luminoso. Sé que compramos uno para la frente de la casa recientemente, pero lo cambiaría en un segundo por esta mariposa. Me encanta que las bombillas son los ojos. No sé si mi vida será completa antes de conseguir uno.
