Carrot Harvest
My mom came to visit this weekend. It was great to have her here. We played games, cooked, baked, and watched a movie, but my favorite activity were the Christmas gifts that we started. Any ideas what we are making?
The presents are a secret, but I can share an exciting discovery. Our carrots were ready to harvest! Â I forgot to take a picture outside, but here they are on the kitchen counter after they were cleaned.
I planted the carrots too close together, so they are deformed, but I love their imperfections. The double carrot is my favorite.
There was also one last tomato hanging on the vine.
Since this is the first year that we have harvested carrots, I had to do some research on how to store them. I learned that the tops should be removed so that they do not draw nutrients and moisture from the carrots.
One of the sites that I read said that carrots should be stored in a box of sand. I do not have any sand around, so I took a chance that the carrots could hang out in the basket we hung down in the basement with the sweet potatoes. There are not that many carrots, so we should eat them fairly quickly. I ate a number of them yesterday! They are so much tastier than grocery store carrots.
I put the greens in the freezer. I will use them in soup. Waste not; want not!
I am thrilled with my first carrot harvest. Next year will be even better!
Happy Homemaking!
Hi Jessica – hope you’re doing well, house and garden are looking fab. I’m keeping up to date via your blog! Mines sadly lacking right now but loads going on here as my kitchen is currently roofless! Eek!
This does not seem to be a good time of year to be roofless! Hopefully, that is rectified soon. Thanks for leaving a comment. It is great to hear from you. I think of you periodically and wonder how you are doing.
Your produce is beautiful! Were the seeds all heirloom?
They were. It was a package of mixed colors. I just should have separated them more.
Your carrots are splendid. Sounds like you and your mom made a right swell weekend of creativity and good eating. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
We always have fun together, and the carrots were a nice surprise.
When I looked at the pic of your mom with the jars, my first thought was, “Fruit fly traps!” Maybe not …
Your carrots are beautiful! We didn’t plant our garden this year, and I miss those colorful carrots. Ours always turn out deformed because we don’t thin enough. Some are “anatomically correct” and they make us laugh!
No! Not fruit fly traps. Thank goodness. You did make me laugh, though. I guess you’ve been looking at too many of those. I also had to laugh about the anatomically correct carrots. I won’t mention what Douglas did with the double one as soon as he saw it.
Ohh, they look fab. I’m really jealous – I bet they taste amazing! I particularly like the look of the purple ones – you’ve definitely motivated me to plant more veggies next year!
Go for it!! They are delicious. Growing food was not as easy as I thought it would be, but I get a little better every year. I do love eating fresh produce.
Love all the colours in your carrots. I only had three carrots this year, but it was my first year trying and they were eaten by slugs when they were baby carrots!
Grrrr. I hate slugs! The worst is when you step on them with bare feet.
the colors are so beautiful! do they taste any different? i’m ashamed to say i’ve only ever eaten orange carrots.
Fresh carrots from an organic garden taste better than grocery store carrots, but the different colors do not have different tastes. I love the rainbow, though!
