Dog Bed Redesign

There had never been a dog bed in my house before Douglas moved in. My dog Freckles the Freak slept either on my bed or the couch. She was not opposed to sleeping on the floor, but she never asked for a bed of her own. She just was not demanding like that.

I do not know if Sambucca was obsessed with beds, but I have a feeling that Douglas kept bringing them in whether she asked for them or not. When I met them, there were three enormous dog beds in their apartment.

I really miss those girls! It was hard for me to get over both of their deaths in one year. Luckily, they sent us Kahlua and Crème de Menthe to help fill the void. Kahlua likes the bed we keep in the bedroom, but the others were just in the way.

This one in particular always really bothered it. It was huge, and the zipper was broken. It also had another dog’s name embroidered on it.

I was ready for a change. Kahlua approved, and Douglas signed off. Unfortunately, Crème de Menthe was not on board with the project. I am not sure if she was against the redesign of the dog bed, or if she was just did not want any projects to occur that day. For whatever reason she had, she did everything she could to keep the work from occurring. It might be hard to tell in the blurry pictures, but that is her rolling and running over the fabric.

The rampaging cat made things difficult, so I tried to make everything as simple as possible. First, I took out the pad inside and turned the bed inside out. Then, I used a fabric pencil to draw a square and pinned the top to the bottom. I did not take any care to ensure that the lines were straight or equal, but I think I did a good job of eyeing it.

Next, I sewed three and a half sides together. I am not the world’s greatest seamstress, but this is not technical work. It was just following a line.  This is a sewing machine that I found in the trash.

It looked pretty good when I put the stuffing back in. All that was left was to stitch the opening.

This part had to be sewn by hand. It took a while, but it was not hard. I did it while watching Pretty Woman.

Crème stayed close by to point out anything that was not up to standard. She can always be relied on for some constructive criticism.

The redesigned bed received two paws up from Kahlua. That is the highest form of compliment around these parts.

About

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Good work! Two paws up!

I have a found sewing machine, too. I’ve never used it. I think I’m terrified of going into territory that my mom so totally owns. Gotta get over myself….
