Garden Inspiration in Maryland

My mother and I took a trip to Maryland. We left on Saturday and returned to my house late Tuesday night. The purpose of the trip was a family birthday. This little peanut turned one year old.

Have you ever seen a happier birthday girl? She loved every minute of her party. I am glad that I was able to attend.

While in Maryland, I took some inspiration from a few different gardens. This is the garden at my aunt and uncle’s house.

The beans are growing up the fence that separates the garden from the rest of the back yard. I may or may not have eaten fistfuls of sugar snap peas straight from the vine.

The plants closest to the front are mostly volunteers that came up from last summer.

There are raised beds for some of the produce.

I particularly love how my aunt used old metal chairs as tomato trellises. It is an awesome look.

My aunt also has a mature sour cherry tree in the front yard. This is what my little tree aspires to be one day. The cherry production is unbelievable. That ladder will be there throughout June until the last of the cherries is picked. We had the best sour cherry pie ever on Sunday. I wish that I had taken a picture of it. We inhaled it too quickly to even snap a quick pic.

My cousins bought their house recently.

This summer they added the garden in the front yard since the back yard is too shaded.

This has an English kitchen garden look to me. I like the garden in the front yard. The rocks around the perimeter are nice too.

They also have a grapevine. It was just planted this spring so it is a year behind my vines.

Their herbs are in the bed closest to the house and in pots on the front stairs. I am so jealous of their front porch.

I did not take any pictures of the last garden that inspired me. The reason is that you can visit Jo’s blog and look at all of her pictures! Some of those radishes even came home with me on Tuesday. They were delicious. It was great to meet this lovely lady and her husband in person. My only complaint was that our visit was too short! Update: Jo wrote a lovely post about our visit and here is a picture from it.

So, that was my inspiration to improve my gardens even further. We are at least a couple of weeks behind Maryland in our harvest. Things are growing well so far this year, and we have even been able to harvest some produce already. I will give you an update on my garden on Monday. Here is a preview.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. LOVE the metal chairs as tomato trellis’ – that is brilliant! And so cool looking. Also love the pic of the birthday girl with frosting all over her face! That is totally how I’m eating my next birthday cake. Sounds like a wonderful trip!

  2. Beautiful gardens. We picked our first order of French beans last night. It was great to meet you and, yes, the visit was too short. Maybe next visit our dining room won’t look like a landfill. Have a great weekend. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

  3. What an amazing garden.

We have friends who live on a small lot on a hill, but they cram in an amazing raised bed garden that reminds me of this garden. I really must think about growing some of our food.

    • It is amazing how much food you an fit in a small space, even container gardens with plants in pots can produce a lot when done well.

  4. Is your cousin’s house the one where your old dining table landed? I, too, love the idea of using chairs as trellises. We must have some old metal stuff around here … it’s like garden art! How nice you got to meet Jo and Charlie!

    • It is! It was fun to visit the table again and meet Charlie and Jo. They are as sweet in person as you would expect them to be after reading Jo’s blog.
