Gardening in Winter
Caring for a garden requires year round care. That is something that I did not understand when I started one. I thought that my work for the year was done when I put the garden to bed in November, however, we had more to do this weekend.
I had left the plants in the front garden bed as food for birds, but I felt that it was time to clean things up. It looked really messy.
Everything looked much better once all of the dead plants were cut down.
I also had Douglas tie this bush to a stake. It has been growing crookedly, and I wanted to straighten it out.
While we were out there working, it started to snow. There was not enough snow for us to have a white Christmas, something I am still sad about, but enough to get Kahlua excited.
Noticing that our gogi berry bush is still producing fruit made me as giddy as Kahlua. The red berries look so pretty against the winter landscape.
The plants around the back porch received some love as well. I cleaned up the pots and the bed along the back of the house.
The gogi bush is not the only plant that is fruitful this December. Our sage plant is still going strong as well. We used the fresh sage for our stuffing for both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. It was delicious.
It might not be the most exciting work in the world, but having a pretty yard and producing some of our own food make the work worthwhile. It is always good to get outside and work in the dirt, even in the winter.
Happy Homemaking!
Now please fly out here and do mine!!!
I so wish that I could! Someday.
You’re so smart to garden in the “off season”. Our yard is still covered with leaves although our son said he and his friend are coming tomorrow afternoon (just in time for the New Year) to blow them into the woods. I don’t really think they know what they’re in for but the boys are young so let them have their fun. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
Happy New Year! I hope the boys got the leaves taken care of. Sometimes I get the urge to let a forest grow up around our house just so that we don’t have to take care of the yard anymore. Our neighbors might hate us though!
Wow! Douglas isn’t wearing pants? It’s freezing here this week, there’s no way I’m gardening! Happy New Year!
It is freezing here too, but Douglas stubbornly refuses to wear pants! He did break down and put them on one time this week. Happy New Year to you as well!
