Harry Potter Room ~ El cuarto de Harry Potter

Upstairs in what was the kitchen and is now the boys’ bedroom, there is a small storage closet under the eaves. In this picture, it is behind the bed. The boys immediately started calling it the Harry Potter Room, and we were able to turn it into a great place for them to play.

Arriba en lo que antes era la cocina y ahora es la habitación de los muchachos, hay un clóset pequeñito bajo los aleros. En esta foto, se encuentra detrás de la pared donde está la cama. Los muchachos lo nombraron el Cuarto de Harry Potter de una vez al encontrarlo. Pudimos convertirlo en un espacio divertido para ellos donde se pueden jugar.

There used to be cables running through the closet for the television and telephone. Back in March, Douglas pulled all of those and patched the hole in the exterior wall.

Antes había cables de televisión y teléfono que pasaban por el clóset. En marzo, Douglas se hizo cargo que quitar todos los cables y bloqueó el hueco en la pared exterior.

When my brothers were here in June, they finished the job by patching the hole in the interior wall for us. You can see the patch circled in this picture. Everything looks so bad that the patch doesn’t really stand out.

The boys were so anxious to use the room, that they did not want me to paint. I understood their excitement, but I knew that the room would be more fun to play in if it looked nice.

In mid-July, I finally got around to painting. It was a challenging job, but I finished in two days, giving the room two coats of semi gloss paint. I hope that will make it easier to clean. I used the same paint that we used for the trim downstairs.

It was difficult to paint this space, with the low, slanting ceiling and little room to move around. I ended up with paint in my hair and completely covering my feet. I did not even realize what my feet looked like until I crawled out.

After letting the paint cure for two whole days, our oldest son, S, helped me hang LED lights. On the floor beside the bed there is a small hole that the cables used to come out of. We were able to use the plug beside the bed and run the LED lights through that hole. The boys love the fact that they can change the lights according to their mood. There is even a setting where the lights will change to the beat of any music they put on in the room.

Después de dejar curar la pinturas por dos días completos, nuestro hijo mayor, S, me ayudó a colocar luces LED. Cerca del piso, al lado de la cama, hay un huequito de donde antes salían los cables. Pudimos enchufar las luces al lado de la cama e insertar el filamento de las luces por el agujero. A los muchachos les fascina que puedan cambiar el color de las luces según su estado de ánimo. Incluso hay una configuración donde las luces cambian con el ritmo de la música que se escucha.

One concern was that someone could get locked in the closet and not be able to leave. We took care of that by turning the female side of the lock around so that it cannot be secured anymore. I did not want to take it off completely, because I did not want to lose it and I like the look of it. Turning the one side around was the perfect solution… at least until one of the boys figures it out and breaks out a screwdriver to lock his brother inside. Any bets on how long that will take?

Una preocupación era que alguien se podríá quedar adentro y no poder salir. Nuestra solución fue dar la vuelta a la parte femenina de la cerradura para que siempre se pudiera abrir sin problemas. No quería quitar el cerrojo completamente porque no quería que se perdiera y también porque me gusta cómo se ve. Cambiar la orientación de un lado de la cerradura fue la solución perfecta… al menos lo es hasta que uno de los muchachos se dé cuenta de que puede usar un destornillador para arreglar la cerradura y cerrar a su hermano allí adentro. ¿Te gustaría apostar cuánto tiempo tarde?

Our last contribution was to install carpeting that our former renter left in the house. We cut a piece of carpet pad and carpeting that fit the Harry Potter room perfectly and threw the rest out. It was a happy coincidence that the carpet was blue and that was the color that they chose for their bedroom.

El último aporte mío y de Douglas fue instalar una alfombra que la inquilina había dejado en la casa cuando se mudó. Cortamos un pedazo de la alfombrilla de abajo y de la alfombra. Quedó perfecto y tiramos lo que sobraba. Fue una coincidencia feliz de que la alfombra es azul y es el color que los muchachos escogieron para su habitación.

Once the carpet was in, the boys started bringing in their treasured possessions. S is particularly proud of the medals, ribbons and a trophy he won on the swim team this summer. Everything is proudly displayed.

The boys found the bean bag chair on the curb. After checking to make sure that there were no insects or arachnids sheltered in it, we cleaned it and brought it into the Harry Potter Room. Unfortunately, it is the only seat, but the carpet is comfortable enough to lounge on.

The boys love this room. When we are at home, they can almost always be found in the Harry Potter Room. Everyone who comes to our house is immediately offered a tour. The other day, they asked me if I thought that they could charge admission, so if you would like to see it, I recommend you come soon before the entrance fee goes into effect.

A los muchachos les encanta este cuartito. Cuando estamos en casa, casi siempre se pueden encontrar aquí en el Cuarto de Harry Potter. Cada persona que visita recibe inmediatamente una invitación de visitarlo. El otro día me preguntaron si les sería posible combrar admisión, así que si te gustaría verlo, sugiero que visites pronto antes de que entre en vigencia la tasa de entrada.

All in all, we are all thrilled with how this little room turned out. And we were able to do it all for the cost of a little paint and LED lights. The paint was the most expensive at around $60 for a gallon, but I did not use the whole can. The LED lights cost $10. Everything else we got for free, already had, or were given. The Harry Potter stickers were a gift. In interest of full disclosure. This playroom does not normally look so well organized. I will leave you with a view from a normal day.

Estamos todos encantados con la transformación de este cuartito. Lo mejor es que pudimos hacer todo por sólo el precio de pintura y las luces LED. La pintura fue lo más cara, costando sesenta dólares más o menos por un galón, pero no usé la lata completa. Las luces LED costaron solamente diez dólares. Todo lo demás adquirimos gratis, ya teníamos o se nos regaló. Las calcomanías eran regalos. Con vistas a ser completamente sincera, este cuarto normalmente no se ve tan organizado.
