Kitty Dining Room
My cat now has a new eatery.
Cat food is bad for dogs; it is too rich for them. Therefore, we had been feeding Crème de Menthe in a cat carrier in the second bedroom so that Kahlua could not get to the food. It was functional but not very attractive.
Then, I read this post on Off Beat Home. The comments section lead me to this Ikea Hackers post.
You might remember that we found this table on the curb Labor Day Weekend 2012. I wrote about it in the post Curb Sale Finds. I have since seen the same table, albeit in prime condition, for $785 on Craigslist. That table also came with five folding chairs that fit inside. I only have one of the folding chairs. Anyway, Ikea Hackers gave me the idea to use the table to feed the cat. There is a roll-up door on one side to allow her in and also hide the food when we have company over.
It was easy as pie to move the food dish into the kitchen. The best part is that the sliding door is not the only way to access the space. It is a drop leaf table, so the sides come up. The food can be stored in there as well.
Crème fits in easily, and there is enough room for her to eat on one side and drink on the other. She has already given it her seal of approval with two paws up.
Unfortunately, I forgot to tell Douglas that I had moved the cat dishes. He closed the roll up door, and the next morning it took us a while to figure out why she was so angry about something. She has since forgiven us. At least she was only without food for a night, and she prefers to drink out of Kahlua’s bowl, which was still accessible.
Happy Homemaking!
I made a similar thing with an end table cabinet thing that I got at a Salvation army Store. I attached a hook latch to the two front doors, and then cut a tidy cat sized hole in one door. There is room inside for the litter box (my dog loves the kitty krunchies), and his food bowl can either be on top of the table, or I may add a little shelf inside the cabinet for his food bowl.
I have plans for the kitty litter as well. It is currently in the guest room closet, but we pull it out if anyone come to visit which is a pain. I love your end table idea.
