Lazy Dayz in the Garden
Last week was our first week of summer vacation, and we spent it preparing for our yard sale last weekend. I have a lot of projects planned for this summer while we have more time. Unfortunately, I do not seem to have the motivation to complete any of them. I have been slowly cleaning the house, which was a huge mess after the sale this weekend, but other than that things have been stalled. We have been lazing around and enjoying the yard.
Both Kahlua and Crème have been happy to be outside with us. In fact, they are thrilled to have us around all day long and are a big part of why it is so hard to work. They just want to play all the time! How could you say no to that face?
We bought a harness for Crème. She is still wary in the great outdoors, but I think she appreciates being about to explore even in this limited way.
Our young neighbors have been keeping us company as always. They adore Kahlua and Crème. I think they like Douglas and I as well, but they cannot remember his name. They call him husband.
In between naps, outdoor play and episodes of Arrested Development, we did manage to do some work in the garden.
The edamame was starting to grow up the sunflowers, so I rigged something for them to climb. I am not sure how this will work, but I figured it was worth a shot.
Things are growing well. The cucumbers are starting to blossom, and the squash and pumpkins are going crazy.
I did find this bug on the pumpkin plants. Does anyone know what it is? Should I worry?
Unfortunately, the tomatoes are growing very slowly. I am not sure why they are struggling so. Does anyone have any tips how to help them? My tomatoes went crazy when I had them in the front yard but have never done well in the raised bed in the back yard. I would put them in the front again, but there is not space for them anymore.
Some of our produce is already ripe for consumption. We have started eating the sweet peas and lettuce. The sweet peas never make it into the house, however. They are so good that I pick them and eat them in the garden. Douglas managed to snag a couple as well.
The sour cherries in the front yard are out of control. I never thought that we would have so many only one year after planting the tree. I cannot wait for sour cherry pie!
Here is what I picked this morning. This should make a nice crisp.
There was one empty spot in the garden. I forgot what I planted there, but whatever it was is not growing. I told you I am an amateur gardener! This week, I decided to buy some potato plants to put there. We got sweet potatoes. Douglas is going to plant them today.
While we were at the nursery, we decided to buy a couple more plants. I really wanted a second raspberry bush. We are going to put this one in the front garden.
Here is the one that we already have in the back. We planted this one last spring.
We bought blueberry and gogi bushes as well. Douglas has his work cut out for him today. You might ask why I am not going to help, but I am headed to Long Island to celebrate my cousin’s graduation. Douglas decided to stay home. He brought it on himself you might say.
I also bought some more flowers.
So, things are going well in the garden, but nothing is happening in the house. Please, wish me some luck and motivation. This week of laziness has been good for me, but now I need to get some things done! In the meantime, here are a few more pictures from around the yard.
Also, feel free to join me over at Toosie Time’s Fertilizer Friday to see some gardens grown by way more experienced gardeners.
Happy Homemaking!
