Less Green

Less money and fewer trees, our property lost a lot of green today. It was a sad day at the Cape of Dreams. This is what the yard looked like on Wednesday.

This is the view today.

Obviously this was not a job that we could do on our own. We were lucky to find a great company to do it for us. If you are in Westchester and need to have a tree trimmed or removed, definitely call SavATree. This is not a sponsored post, but I wish it were. We paid full price for the service, but it was reasonable at $1600. Take a last look at the trees before they were butchered.

Our neighbor has lived next door for a long time. He informed us that at one time this ash tree was hit by lightening. You can see the scar here. Something made a nest in it. When we were shown just how hollow it was, we knew that it had to come down despite how sad we were to remove it.

I spent some time hugging the tree and letting it know how sorry I was. It certainly did not look like it was dying.

Everyone that worked on our property was completely professional and nice. They got right to work and were very efficient. Three guys worked on our property.

It was amazing how they took down all of the branches without damaging anything.

Even the trunk came down without a problem.

They took out the pricker bush for me as well at no extra cost. When I think how long it took Douglas and I to remove the last one, I have to laugh. It took these guys about ten seconds with a chain saw.

The stump was ground down. That cost an additional $400 (included in the total price), but it was worth it in my mind.

I knew that the tree was starting to rot on the inside, but I was horrified to see just how large the hollow section was. We made the right decision to chop it down.

They trimmed the second ash, since it is in good condition and did not need to be removed. They also added a cable so that the tree will be stronger in high winds. I am pleased that the cable is so difficult to see.

The oak in front was also trimmed to keep it off the roof and electric cables. I was sad to see it cut, but I have to remember that this makes it healthier.

While they were working, I cleaned out this garden bed that had become totally overgrown.

I also replanted the enormous hosta that was removed from below the tree.

The guys completely cleaned the yard and even roof and gutters. They stacked the wood for us and gave us all the wood chips. We will give the wood to my mother for her fireplace. The wood chips will be used to mulch the garden beds. That is a lot of chips!

I miss the tree, but the yard does get a lot more light. I miss my money even more, but that is the cost of home ownership. What is going on at your house?

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. • I must admit that I am looking forward to having more sun as well. And that part of the yard now seems so much bigger and we have some plans for it.

  1. It is so sad to see living trees come down, even though it’s necessary for safety. We had to remove our 80-ft Douglas fir a couple years ago after it lost too many branches in an ice storm and became unbalanced. I hugged it before it came down, too!
