Monday, March 28 – el lunes 28 de marzo

Monday was the day that we had reserved to visit Edinburgh Castle. Unbeknownst to us, it was a bank holiday in Great Britain, and there was a possibility that the castle would be overrun with tourists. Carole and Adam had gone on the previous Saturday while we were at Stirling Castle, and they had not enjoyed their visit because of the hoards. We decided to test our luck since Taylor was working that morning, and she did not want to visit the castle with us. Those stern men at the entrance are William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, who did not seem to enjoy that many visitors either.

El lunes era el día que habíamos reservado para visitar el Castillo de Edimburgo. Sin saberlo, también era un día festivo en Gran Bretaña y existía la posibilidad de que hubiera muchísimos turistas en el castillo ese día. Carole y Adam habían visitado el sábado anterior y no habían gozado la visita por las hordas. Decidimos tentar la suerte e ir de todos modos porque Taylor tenía que trabajar ese mañana y no quería ir al castillo con nosotros. Esos hombres severos en la entrada son William Wallace y Roberto de Brus que no parecían disfrutar la visita de tanta gente tampoco.

There were a lot of people but not enough to diminish our enjoyment. In fact, I relished the opportunity to observe the humanity around me, like these girls and their brightly colored tresses, reminding me of an Easter egg coven.

Había mucha gente, pero no tanta para disminuir nuestro placer de estar allí. De verdad, me gustaba observar la humanidad que me rodeaba, como estas muchachas y su cabello de colores brillantes que me hacían pensar en una asamblea de brujas o hueves pintados para la pascua.

The buildings also interested me. I love stone structures, and these are spectacular specimens.

Los edificios también me llamaban la atención. Me encantan los edificios de piedra, y estos son bellísimos.

The views were also phenomenal. I appreciated the perspective from the top of Castle Rock.

Las vistas también eran fenomenales. Apreciaba la perspectiva de la cima de la Roca del Castillo.

For some reason, my favorite vantage points were through the old archers’ or canon holes.

Por alguna razón, las puntas panorámicas que más me gustaban eran de los agujeros arqueros o de los cañones.

The museums were not as fascinating to me as the ones in Stirling Castle had been. Of course, some of them were very similar, so perhaps I would have enjoyed these more had I visited here first. Many of the exhibits are dedicated to war, as the castle houses the National War Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National War Memorial, and yes those are two separate things. It was hard for me to mourn the loss of lives, when those lives were lost invading countries that should have been left alone. Maybe I feel that way because I come from one of those former colonies.

Los museos no me fascinaban tanto como los del Castillo de Stirling, pero puede ser porque eran similares y habíamos visitado a Stirling primero. A lo mejor me habrían gustado estos más si los hubiera visto primero. Muchas de las exhibiciones estaban dedicadas a la guerra, como el Museo nacional de guerra de Escocia y el Monumento nacional de guerra de Escocia, y sí es verdad que esas con dos cosas independientes. Me era difícil lamentar las muertes cuando esas muertes ocurrieron durante las invasiones de países que deberían haber dejado en paz. Puede ser que me siento así porque vengo de una de las colonias antiguas.

I did appreciate the tours of a couple of the prisons, despite the horror I felt for the former prisoners. It was fascinating to see the things that some of them created while imprisoned, such as the clock featured below.

Sí apreciaba ver las prisiones antiguas, aunque me sentía horror al pensar en los pobres prisioneros. Me fascinaba ver las cosas que hicieron algunos de los prisioneros como el reloj abajo.

The Great Hall was also beautiful.

El gran salón también era bonito.

I loved the details of the constructions of elements such as the ceiling and the paneling. They just don’t make things like they used to. Of course, it is hard since we no longer have the old wood forests or the slave labor.

Me encantaban los detalles como el techo y las paredes cubiertos de madera. No hacen las cosas como las hacían en el pasado. Claro que sería difícil porque hoy día no tenemos los bosques de madera vieja ni el trabajo esclavo.

The inside of the Royal Palace was equally detailed.

El palacio real tenía los mismos detalles impresionantes.

I would love to have this paneling in my house. This is nothing like the fake stuff that they were putting in tract homes in the 1970’s. Look at the details of these joints.

Me encantaría tener este revestimiento de madera en mi casa. No es el revestimiento falso de los años 1970. Mira los pormenores de las junturas.

We also enjoyed the one o’clock firing of the canon.

También disfrutamos el disparo del cañón a la una de la tarde.

Douglas as a typical man, especially enjoyed investigating the weapons.

A Douglas, como a todos los hombres estereotípicos, le gustaba inspeccionar las armas de fuego.

I went inside St. Margaret’s Chapel, known as the oldest building in Edinburgh. It is tiny. Douglas did not enter because he was holding our spot at the wall overlooking the firing of the canon.

Yo entré en la Capilla de Santa Margarita, conocida como el edificio más anciano de Escocia. Es diminuta. Douglas no entró porque estaba guardando nuestros puestos en la pared con vista al cañón.

From the top of that wall we also had a good view of the cemetery of the soldiers’ dogs.

De allí podíamos ver el cementerio de los perros de los soldados, además.

This building house the man in charge of the castle now. Just as in the Tower of London, I had to imagine how cool it would be to live in this ancient fortress.

En este edificio vive el hombre encargado del castillo. Como en la Torre de Londres tenía que preguntarme cómo sería vivir en una fortaleza antigua.

Just before leaving we left, Douglas went into the whiskey shop for a free tasting, and when he came out he recommended that I try them as well. They were two Scotch liquors, and I must admit that while I cannot abide whiskey, I did enjoy these. Now I have to try to find them in the States

Antes de salir del castillo, Douglas entró en la tienda para probar los escoceses que estaban regalando y cuando salió, recomendó que yo entrar a probarlos también. Eran dos licores de escocés y tengo que admitir que me gustaban, aunque no aguanto el wiski para nada. Ahora los necesito encontrar aquí en Estados Unidos.

Overall, I would recommend visiting the castle if you are in Edinburgh. We enjoyed our visit.

En general, recomiendo que vayas al castillo si te encuentras en Edimburgo alguna vez. Nos gustó la visita.

After leaving the castle, we took a bus to meet Taylor at the bakery in Portobello where she was working. These days with Google maps, it can be really easy to figure out public transportation. You just enter your destination, hit the button for public transportation and follow the instructions. Here are some pictures I took while on the bus.

Después de salir del castillo, tomamos un autobús para reunirnos con Taylor en la panadería en Portobello donde estaba trabajando. Estos días con Google, es muy fácil navegarte por el transporte público. Sólo hay que entrar la dirección del destino en los mapas de Google, oprimir el botón para el transporte público y seguir las instrucciones. Aquí están unas fotos que saqué del autobús.

Of course, there are times when Google decides that it is smarter than you, and despite the fact that you entered the address exactly as it should be, changes the address to take you where it thinks that you should go instead. That is what happened to us. We ended up several miles from where we wanted to be in an industrial section of Leith, instead of the tourist friendly Portobello. On the positive side, we saw were we could buy the whiskey barrels that I so desperately wanted and where the racing greyhounds are kept on their days off.

Entonces, puede ser así de fácil, pero a veces Google decide que es más inteligente que tú y cambia la dirección que entras a una dirección adonde quiere que vayas. Eso es lo que nos pasó en Escocia. En vez de llegar en la sección turístico de Portobello donde está la panadería donde trabaja Taylor nos dejó en una parte industrial de Leith unas millas de nuestro destino. Por el lado positivo tuvimos la oportunidad de ver dónde podríamos haber comprado barriles de escocés que yo tanto quería si hubiéramos quedado en Escocia y dónde ponen los galgos cuando no están compitiendo.

By the time that we finally arrived at the bakery, my feet were on fire and I was cranky. We had to stop at a shop for tea before I could continue on. I did not take many pictures at the bakery beside this one of a chandelier that I hope to attempt to make for myself.

Cuando por fin llegamos a la panadería me dolían los pies y estaba de muy mal humor. Tuvimos que parar en un café para tomar un té para que me mejorara el ánimo antes de continuar. Sólo saqué una foto en el café de este candelabro que me gustaría hacer para mi casa.

After tea, my mood was much improved. Taylor took a few pictures of Douglas and I in front of the Firth of Forth.

Después de tomar el té y descansar un rato me sentía muchísimo mejor y Taylor nos sacó unas fotos enfrente de la playa de Portobello.

Then we took a stroll down the beachfront. This used to be the summer vacation destination for the Edinburghers with money, but now they prefer the Mediterranean.

Entonces caminamos frente a la playa. Esto era el destino veraniego de los Edimburgos con dinero en el pasado, pero ahora prefieren el Mediterráneo.

It was a pretty walk, but I would have enjoyed it more had my feet not been hurting as badly.

Era una caminata bonita, pero la habría gozado más si no me hubieran dolido tanto los pies.

While we were in the tearoom, I had discovered that the culprits were my boots and the fact that they are over sixteen years old, and the inserts, or insoles as Douglas informs me that they are called, had never been changed. They were worn through in some places and had strange bulges in others. It is a shame that I did not discover this before we left. I had noticed that my boots hurt me some, but I never used them enough for me to truly suffer until I wore them all day long for six days straight.

Mientras estábamos en el café me di cuenta porque me ardían así los pies. Eran las botas que llevaba que tenían más de veinte años. Nunca había cambiado la parte interior y estaba en muy mala condición. Es una lástima que no supe antes del viaje cuando tenía que llevar las botas todo el día por seis días seguidos.

Despite the pain in my feet, we decided to visit Calton Hill. It was only a short walk from our hotel.

A pesar del dolor, decidimos visitar la colina de Calton. Sólo tardamos unos minutos caminando de nuestro hotel.

There were a lot more gorse bushes on the path up.

Había más tojo en la colina.

Here are the Dugald Stewart Monument, the Nelson Monument, and the National Monument of Scotland.

Aquí están los monumentos de Dugald Stewart, Nelson y el Nacional de Escocia.

There is also the City Observatory.

También está el Observatorio de la ciudad.

As with the castle, the best part were the views from the top.

Como en el castillo lo mejor eran las vistas de arriba.

Taylor took some great pictures of us.

Taylor sacó más fotos bonitas de nosotros.

From Calton Hill we walked to the restaurant Nom de Plume. Along the way, we saw some interesting sculptures, including one of mating grasshoppers.

De la colina de Calton, caminamos al restaurante que se llama Nom de Plume. En camino vimos algunas esculturas como la de los grillos acoplándose.

I cannot say enough about how much I liked Nom de Plume, not only for the delicious food, but also for the atmosphere. Douglas enjoyed several Scotches, while Taylor and I had the mulled wine. Desert was delicious.

No puedo decir lo suficiente para mostrar cuánto me gustaba aquel restaurante, tanto por la comida como por la atmosfera. Douglas disfrutó unos escoceses mientras Taylor y yo bebimos el vino caliente con especias. El postre fue delicioso.

After parting from Taylor, Douglas and I wandered the city for a while waiting for our evening entertainment.

Después de despedirnos de Taylor vagábamos por la ciudad esperando nuestro entretenimiento de la noche.

That evening at eleven, Douglas and I had booked a nighttime tour of the underground city and the Covenanters’ Prison in Greyfriar’s Graveyard. Taylor thought that it would be too scary for her, but I thought that it was more fascinating than scary. I really enjoyed learning those aspects of the history of Edinburgh. The underground city was particularly horrifying as a concept, if not particularly scary to tour now.

A las once de la noche tomamos un tur nocturno de la ciudad bajo tierra y la cárcel de los firmantes del pacto contra el rey de Inglaterra en el cementerio de Greyfriar. Taylor pensaba que sería demasiado temible para ella, pero a mí me fascinaba por la historia de esos aspectos de la ciudad. La ciudad bajo tierra fue especialmente horrorosa para mí como concepto del pasado sino como tur hoy día.

Overall, Monday was a good day, my pain notwithstanding. En general, el lunes fue un buen día en Edimburgo pese al dolor.
