Mow, Mow, Mow Your Lawn
This post was written earlier and scheduled to post today. I am in Costa Rica and will not have regular access to the internet. Please, DO leave comments but understand that I will not be able to respond to them immediately. Also, feel free to extend your condolences to Douglas, Kahlua and Crème, who have been left behind to guard the fort while I am away.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Mow, Mow, Mow Your Lawn
Gently cut the grass,
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
I’m a happy lass.
You can imagine me singing the opening lines of this post to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Actually, it would be even better if you sing it yourself, but then you might get it stuck in your head all day, which is what happened to me. I would attach a video of me singing the song for you, but then no one would ever come back to this blog.
If you did not already figure it out, this post is about cutting the grass. While this is vastly different than cutting the rug, there is a certain grace to it, especially if you have a push mower, which we do.
Here are the reasons that I prefer to use an old-fashioned push mower over one powered by electric or gas.
1) It is better exercise. This is particularly important because Douglas is usually the one that mows the grass, and we all know that he does not get enough exercise. OK. That is a lie, and if you do not understand the joke, you can read this post where I mention how he did a 62-mile run… for fun. Still, it is important to note that in general we modern humans do not get as much exercise as we should, and mowing the lawn with a push mower will help in that department.
2) It is better for the environment. Using gas or electricity provided by a power station just is not good for Planet Earth. If you do not believe me, than you should do the research for yourself.
3) It is good for the grass. My lawn is much happier now than it was in the past when I was paying someone to mow it with a gas-powered machine. I am not sure why this is. I could do the research, but I am too lazy. One of the items on our project list was to reseed and improve the lawn. The grass this summer is far better than it has ever been since I moved in. What do you think?
4) There is no noise pollution. Sometimes when I am in my house reading, relaxing, possibly watching a movie, a neighbor will start up his or her lawn mower and shatter the calm. The only thing worse than the sound of a lawn mower is the racket from a leaf blower. I detest those things if you could not tell. The sound of a lawn mower is a good way to wake someone up from their afternoon nap. People do not usually appreciate being awoken when they are napping. They do not want to have to turn up the volume when they are trying to watch a movie. Using a human-powered push mower will not interrupt anyone in any way.
5) This is a more personal reason. I cannot promise that this will be true for you. However, I like the look of a hot man pushing this mower around my lawn.
We found our push mower on the side of the road with a FREE sign on it. One of the wheels was loose and the machine needed some basic maintenance, but Douglas was able to get it running fairly easily.
If you are not lucky enough to find one in the trash, you can buy one. Amazon has many push mowers for sale.
I can understand why you would not want to use a push mower if you have a large yard. For a small lot like ours, I highly recommend them.
Happy Homemaking!
I have a push mower and can attest it is a great workout and much kinder to the environment. My local hardware store has them in stock which was an added bonus. Plus, I Freecycled my gas mower (and gas can) so it was a win-win all around.
Yay for being green!
I’ve always wanted one of these. The gas, oil, the noise and the possibility of a rock going through a window or yanking my shoulder out of place pulling on the starter is just not so appealing. I’d rather do it your way…
but since Richie loves his toys I will just pretend I live at your house. 🙂
You are welcome to imagine a visit any time. I’ll imagine that I changed the sheets in the guest room for you. 🙂
I love the gentle sound a push mower makes. It reminds me of when I was a little kid and my mom would mow our big backyard … and then Pop bought her a power mower. A push mower even came with my house … but it was so hard to push through the thick grass that I soon knuckled under and bought a power mower, myself. Guess it runs in the family!
You do have to cut the grass more frequently with a human powered mower, but we have decided it’s worth it for us.
