“New” Bed – Una cama nueva
We have not been very productive lately, but there is one project that we can check off the list. Five weeks ago, we packed up my great grandmother’s bed that had lived in our guest room, and took it to my mother’s house. That left the bedroom feeling empty.
This is Crème expressing her displeasure. According to her a pile of sheets on the floor is not an acceptable replacement for a bed.
We brought back a trundle bed that my grandmother bought in the 90’s. After she moved out of her house, my mother took the trundle bed. We swapped the antique double bed for this trundle that will give us the same amount of sleeping space, but more room when the bed is not open. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the bed while it was put together.
I planned to get the bed powder coated, but when I sent the pictures and the measurements to the shop where I have had other pieces powder coated, I found out that the back piece was too long. He was not able to do it for me, so I had to paint it myself.
Being lazy and overwhelmed with work, it took me several weeks to get around to starting that project. Finally, on Saturday, May 14 I started sanding the bed. It turned out that someone had stuck clear tape on the bed. It took quite a while to get that off. I blame my cousins.
Culpo a mis primos.
Finally, I could start painting. I did three coats on the first side, waiting thirty minutes between each coat.
I went for a hammered finish, hoping that would mask any imperfections in my paint job.
After the final coat was dry enough to move the bed, we brought it back into the bedroom to cure. I was not able to paint the other side for three days. The paint can said to wait at least 48 hours for the paint to fully cure.
On Tuesday, May 17 I painted the other side. It took me three paint cans to paint the bed. I only got two and a half coats on the second side.
After that the bed had to cure again. We had planned to put the bed back together last weekend, but Douglas had to work all day on Saturday, and we did not get around to putting the bed back together until Monday, May 23.
Crème and Ponche made sure that we did everything correctly.
While we were putting the bed together, I put the brass knobs to boil in a pot of water with baking soda. My goal was to remove the finish so that they could age.
Douglas cut plywood to fit the bed and the trundle because the bottom was badly distorted making the bed uncomfortable.
The memory foam mattresses came in these little boxes. It took them several hours to fill out to their full shape.
The inspectors made sure that the mattresses were fully up to spec. They do not accept anything sub-par.
Finally the bed was fully assembled and ready to use. In fact, it has already been put to use. A good friend stopped by and spent the night on Tuesday, but I did not take a picture of him in the bed. I have my limits.
We still have to set up the room, but at least the bed is painted and constructed. We can figure out the placement of everything else soon.
I am really loving the brass knobs with the dark grey hammered metallic look. Sorry, Grandma Bernie, but I like it a lot better than the white and shiny brass look that it was sporting before.
Happy Homemaking!
¡Que todos sus sueños caseras se cumplan!
It looks great! Love the brass knobs. You have some of the cutest but toughest inspectors anywhere!
Those inspectors are demanding, but they swear that it is because they only want the best for us. I am loving the new look of the bed and keep going into the room to check it out.
I love this transformation. It seems to complement the room better than the larger bed. You made a good trade. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
I loved the other bed, but it was just too big. I would have liked to put it in our room, but Douglas prefers the queen size for us.
So many memories in that bed! Like climbing out of it through the window to meet up with the neighborhood boys…
At least I can not claim responsibility for the tape!
Bad girls! You didn’t tell me what you thought of the new look, though!
It looks fantastic! Good for you for doing the painting slowly and correctly. I get so impatient and rush through stuff sometimes, and later wish I’d taken more time to do it the right way. It looks so good!
To be honest, I should have sanded in between coats, but I skipped that part. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it won’t matter and that no one will notice a few bumps on the back where the drop cloth stuck to the wet paint.
