Philadelphia Mural Project – El proyecto de murales de Filadelfia

First, I would like to extend a big thank you to all who let me know their opinions on my upcoming projects. Hearing from you makes working on things more enjoyable. It is always nice to know that someone is going to notice your hard work, even if it is just via the internet. Check back on Thursday to see what I did. Warning: Things did not go as anticipated. This lovely lady was involved – that always spells trouble.

Today, as I hold you in suspense on the house projects, I am going to share with you some more pictures from our trip to Philadelphia. As you might know, Sofi and I were there on Saturday, January 14, and we toured the city with Chad of Chad’s Crooked House. If you missed the first two episodes, you can check out the Mütter Museum and Isaiah Zagar’s Magic Gardens.

As you can surmise from the title, Philadelphia has embraced the art of the mural. For thirty years, they have been working with artists to bring art to the people. You can read more about it on the Mural Arts Philadelphia homepage.

The entire city is one giant are gallery. It could take a lifetime to see every mural in the city. Sofi and I decided that we would not seek them out, but rather appreciate the ones that we came across in our wanderings of the city. Most of the ones that are shown here are on or around South Street.

Some of the murals are stunning examples of high art. Others are just fun. Those of you who know of my love of ants, thanks to Salvador Dalí, know how desperately I want to get some giant ones to stick on the side of my house! If anyone is thinking of buying me a present at any time, a Godzilla sized ant would be a great one! Hint, hint.

¡Sugerencia gratuita!

Here is a mural surrounded by mosaic by Isaiah Zagar, combining the two art forms that South Street is famous for.

Some of the murals were commissioned by the city, but I have the feeling that others were done by local graffiti artists. A few of them seem to have been done by local business owners to let you know what you will find inside.

The walls are not the only “canvases” for the artwork scattered around the city. Trash cans, newspaper dispensers, and just about everything else have been painted with fun designs.

There are even images on the sidewalks. Everywhere you look there is something to see.

Aún en las aceras hay imágenes. Por todas partes hay algo que ver.

I also snapped a couple of shots of other artist details along our walk.

I hope you have enjoyed this quick introduction to Philadelphia’s mural project. Trust me when I say that I have merely scratched the surface of the public art on display in this great city. You need to go see it for yourself.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. You can read about my projects on my blog www.CapeofDreams.com
