Planting the Garden

The plan was to show you how we planted our new garden beds. The problem is that the evil elves stole the pictures. That has to be what happened because the only other explanation is that I am losing my mind and I did not take the pictures that I quite clearly remember snapping. We know that could not be the case, right?

I did get some pictures of how I laid out the plants.

The little bed now contains asparagus and the wild arugula that was gifted to us from our town’s garden page on Facebook. These are both perennial plants and will therefore come back every year on their own.

The other bed that Douglas built a couple of weeks ago now has tomatoes and lettuce planted in it. Soon we will be making salad.

Our planting was not limited to the big beds. I also put sweet potatoes in these pots. Last year I had sweet potato vine growing in there. It is a decorative plant that is not suitable for eating. Shortly after I had planted it, I began to regret not planting edible sweet potato. After all, if I am going to spend money to plant something, why not plant something that will give me more of a return than good looks?

Beside the stairs I planted mint and golden oregano. These are both perennials as well. Mint is known to take over, but I think that I can keep it in this bed. I  can always remove it if it is not behaving.

A little further over, I planted lemon verbena between another species of oregano and my rhubarb. These are all perennials. I have had this oregano and rhubarb for over three years. Unfortunately, the rhubarb is not doing well, and I am not sure why.

Since Crème is not allowed outside, she asked Star to keep an eye on us. I thought that perhaps we could train Star to dig the holes for us, but she refuse any more active role than just supervising.

Well, she enjoyed supervising and posing for pictures. She is such a happy girl.

You might wonder where Kahlua was while all this work was going on. Can you find her in this picture?

Here she is a wee bit more visible. She is trying her best to get in the house and avoid the camera. By the way, we cleaned the porch thoroughly for the party. It looks so much better now. I will have to show you a picture soon.

Let’s hope that before the next post my memory will come back. I am not sure that my odds are good, but I am hoping that it is overworking that is causing the temporary loss of cerebral function. I cannot accept that this condition be permanent! Although I do not have a picture of the beds once they planted, I did remember to take a picture that shows how they are situated in our yard for Jo. See, I am not completely senile yet!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. I swear, we are going to get the veggies planted this weekend!! It’s you who had the terrible winter, so why is it us who are so far behind?

  2. Thanks for the long shot. Love how you’ve got serious gardening going on all over the place, things tucked here and there. Can’t wait to see how your sweet potatoes turn out. I want potatoes, too, but so far no good. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
