Progress in the Basement
The basement has been a challenge since Douglas moved in. It was difficult to fit all of his stuff with all of my stuff in this little house. Our lower level began to look like hoarders were living there.
Douglas told me for a year and a half that he would clean and organize the basement. Last August I grew sick of waiting for him to deal with it and took matters into my own hands. Things were looking much better.
Then, over the past nine months, the clutter began to return. The basement is easy to ignore because we can just shut the door and no one but us goes down there.
However, the disorganization was starting to really bother me. I felt that the mess was going to swallow me up. That is why one of my New Year’s resolutions was to get the basement cleaned up. Then, nothing happened until last weekend.
The basement is looking much better, and I feel like I can breathe again.
I am most proud of finally organizing the bookshelves. We have a LOT of books. This is even after sorting through them several times and getting rid of about six boxes full. The new little bookcase came from my boss.
This is a start, but we still have a long way to go.
Happy Homemaking!
What a great space. Our basement is tiny and unlivable so we rarely go down there even to clutter it up. Yours is looking terrific. We have lots of books, too, which we rummage through from time to time and pass a few on. We always donate them to “The Book Thing” in Baltimore which sorts and shelves them for others to have for FREE. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
Free books- how wonderful! We always pass ours along too and only keep the ones that we reread. I love our basement. It was one of the selling points when I bought the house. I like that the windows are above ground, so there is a lot of light down there, and that even though it is not finished, we can use it as a room.
I give you big kudos for organizing your basement! The same thing happened in our house when Eric moved in. Two people with a lot of stuff is a challenge in our little house, too. The attic, garage, and basement are hoarder territory and I avoid them because they make me crazy and upset. And, having the dining room covered in stuff from the kitchen and the spare room is really bugging me. We are close to solving the dining room problem, but the other areas are likely to make me mad for a while longer!
It is hard to accept that we cannot get it all done as fast as we would like, but slowly but surely it will get there.
I’m really amazed at how organised it now looks. I have books everywhere as well!
Thank you. Books are wonderful!
