Putting the Garden to Bed
Last weekend while I was working on the climbing post for Crème, Douglas was out in the garden. It was time to clean it out and get it ready for winter. Ready or not winter will be here soon! Here Menderes is taking down the bean posts.
Douglas harvested the last of the produce including a couple of eggplant and peppers. We ate the eggplant that night, and Douglas made hot sauce with the peppers.
He wanted me to try to save the basil plants, so I potted them to bring inside. It would be nice to have fresh basil through the winter. The purple basil is not doing well, but the green does not look that great. Hopefully, it comes back.
After cleaning out the rest of the plants, he added manure and peat moss. Hopefully, that will enrich the soil enough that it will hold the water better next summer.
He also raked some leaves across the top. The garden is now ready for winter. Bring on the snow!
Happy Homemaking!
This will be one of our tasks this weekend. It’s sad to see the garden go, but kind of a relief not to have to tend it for a few months. Your eggplants and peppers are beautiful!
We did not get many eggplants or peppers, but the ones that we got were good. 🙂 The best part of the garden in the winter is making plans.
We very rarely have snow, so I don’t “put my garden to bed”… I need to clear the kitchen garden, though!
We do not always get a lot of snow. It depends on the year. I am hoping for a lot this year!
I’ve always wanted to create my own garden bed. Hopefully it’s something we can tackle in the spring. It must feel so nice to grow your own vegetables.
You should go for it! It is amazing how much you can do with just a little space. We only have an .14 acre lot, and my cousin has a garden in a 400 sq. foot space. It is really amazing to eat something that you have grown.
