Repairing Our Reputation- Day 2

On Monday, I shared day one of our porch renovation. This project was critical, so that we would not longer be “those neighbors” with the plastic and duct tape external repairs.

My lovely little brother generously came to help, enticed by beer and cash.

The second day was a little colder, but the work was easier. At this point, they had already finished the demolition, and replaced the three load bearing pieces. This is where they had left off when the sun went down on Saturday. All that was left was to work on the facade, so that this job would look professional and not haphazard.

It is always important to measure several times and then cut. The guys made sure to make the cuts a little bigger than they thought that they should be. It is not difficult to cut more off, but it is impossible to add more wood on!

In case you cannot tell what Douglas is doing. He is standing on the other end of the board to keep it steady for Justin.

While they were working Crème was in the house going nuts. She desperately wanted to be outside with them. If her opinion it was unconscionable that we would allow work to occur on the house without her inspection. Of course, when I did let her out she immediately ran to the front yard, so I think that was just an excuse. I wanted to show you a video, but that was too technically challenging for me. You can visit my Facebook page to see the video.

We decided that we did not want a solid facade as was there before. It will allow more light into our dark kitchen. They put some boards up that would cover all of the joints and look more finished. The bricks were placed on top to add some weight and give the PL Premium Construction Adhesive a chance to adhere since we did not want to put holes in our new roof with nails.

Here is the finished product and the proud men.We will paint it once we have a day on a weekend when the weather is over 70ºF or 21ºC. I think it is going to look amazing once it is painted; it looks great now.

The last part was the clean-up. Douglas did a great job. I was particularly worried about nails in the driveway, but I think we got them all picked up.

Now our little porch looks habitable again.

We really appreciated Justin’s help. Crème gave him a snuggle when he came in from working to show our gratitude.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house.
