Saying Good Bye to the Sunflowers
Fall has arrived. The air is crisp; school has begun. The leaves are beginning to change colors. Normally I love this season, but this year I am mourning the loss of summer a bit more than in the past. Luckily the weather has been beautiful, cool but sunny. It has made our autumn chores more enjoyable.
The sunflowers were beautiful for the short time they lasted, but by last week they were past their prime. The squirrels were ravaging them. I wanted to get the sunflower seeds harvested before anymore seeds were lost to the fluffy-tailed rats.
Douglas cut them down and strung the flower heads in the shed to dry. Hopefully soon we will have seeds to eat and some to plant next year.
Once the heads were cut off of the plants, the garden was looking pretty bad. I spent two afternoons cutting down all of the sunflowers stalks and chopping them up so that they would fit in the bin. It was exhausting.
Everything looks much better now. I need to buy a some more mums and asters to fill the garden out a bit more.
While I was out there, I really enjoyed the bees and the butterflies. They love the golden rod.
I love the flowers. They always brighten my day and make me feel so much better. What beautiful colors there are out there!
Douglas finished off this weeks garden work by edging the walkways and the driveway. This greatly improved the appearance of our property. It is amazing what a difference such a small detail can make.
I hope you have all been as blessed as we to spend some time outside in this gorgeous weather. I am sharing this post on Tootsie Time’s Fertilizer Friday. Go visit the beautiful gardens. 🙂
Happy Homemaking!
Your sunflowers were pretty; you sure had a lot of them. Here, the goldfinches perch on the seed heads and eat the seeds. Your goldenrod and asters are pretty too.
Thank you. I did not notice any goldfinches, but I did see a lot of squirrels! Every year I debate pulling the asters and goldenrod, but I love the color in the fall.
