Temporary Defeat in the Bathroom
I have always hated the light fixture that is in our bathroom. It is certainly not original to the house, and it is ugly.
Years ago, I purchased one on eBay, but we never got around to installing it. I wanted to wait until the bathroom was painted, which only happened recently. Last weekend, Douglas took down the light fixture in the bathroom to see if he could install the one that I found on eBay.
When you do this, make sure that the power is off. It is also a good idea to label the wires, so that you will be able to reconnect them without burning the house down. As much as Douglas jokes that lighting a match would be easier than all the work we do around here, I am certain that he would be sad if the place actually did catch fire.
Trusty Crème kept him company while he worked. She was not as good about handing him the tools as he needed them. I suppose we have to work on her training. She has trained us much better than we have trained her.
The new fixture was easy to install, but of course it could not just be that easy. The bottom of the fixture just barely overlaps the top of the medicine cabinet, preventing it from opening. Since we need to be able to access the contents of the cabinet, that is not going to work.
For now we have admitted defeat. It is going to take some time to move the box up so that the light will be high enough for the door of the medicine cabinet to open. It will require more time to patch the wall so that no one can tell that we moved the light fixture. That is time that we do not have right now. Hence, work has come to a halt in the bathroom. This is merely a recess and not a termination of the project. We vow to finish but will probably not recommence until June.
I hate to leave the bathroom unfinished and unattractive for now, but at least the paint job looks good. The rest will happen eventually.
Happy Homemaking!
So sorry for your injunction. It’s just these small but annoying problemos that that tap you on the shoulder and say “uh-uh, not now”. I’m sure you’ll work it out though. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
I just have to remember that it does not have to all get done at once. Slow and steady wins the race.
That’s an interesting light fixture–vintage? Can’t wait to see it lit up!
It is vintage and there is a glass part that goes in front. I am hopeful that it will look good if we ever get it in there.
Oh, I know the kind you mean. Makes more sense now. I couldn’t figure out if that grille (which is pretty) was in front or behind. Perfect for your house! 🙂
What about moving the electrical wires up under a special electrical tube (I don’t know the name in English). I did that in my kitchen and the cabinet makes the tube very difficult to see the tube as I painted it the same colour as the wall. It took less time than opening the wall and patching it. It seems it’s called “electrical cable trunking” according to google!
Hmmm, that is an interesting idea. I will have to ask Douglas what he thinks. Thanks for the suggestion!
I think Magali should come and show us how to do it? 🙂 Pretty please…
I like that idea of Magali’s! sounds much easier than moving the box and patching the wall.
The wall will have to be patched either way, but this could save us having to move the box.
