The Headless Bicycle Man

My Halloween decorations have continued. If you read my blog last week, you know that I had planned to make a scarecrow. I did to a fashion, but like almost everything I make, it took on a life of its own and turned into something different. The Headless Bicycleman was born.

Headless Bicycle Man

I started making him a couple of weeks ago. I used a pair of my old jeans that do not fit any more. Not only can I not wear them, but they are a bit threadbare around the crotch, so I was not going to donate them either. I pinned them to an old long-sleeved t-shirt. I tied the extremities of the arms and legs with rubber bands. Crème, of course, kept her eye on everything.

Next, I stuffed the clothes with leaves from the yard.

When I went into the shed to get gloves, I saw this old Schwinn bicycle. It belongs to our tenants. They do not use it, and it was rusting away in the back yard until my husband took pity on it and put it in the shed. I got the idea to put the “scarecrow” on the bike. I was still unsure of what to do for a head, so it sat in the yard without a head for a week. Kahlua was not sure what to think about this creature.

Douglas was the one who came up with an idea for the head. He is an ideas man. If you cannot figure something out, ask him, and he will come up with a solution for you. He thought that it would be good to make a head and put it on the back of the bike. He gave me one of his old helmets that had expired. You are only supposed to use a helmet for three years or one crash, whichever comes first. He also made me some “hair” by unraveling some old rope that we had in the basement.

I still did not know what I was going to use for the head. In the end, I just decided to stuff a bag with leaves.

I attached the “hair” with tape.

And strapped on the helmet. It looks rather creepy, in my opinion, and that is always a good thing on Halloween.

I used twist ties to attach the head to the bicycle, as well as to attach the arms on the handlebars.

I am pleased with the end result. This could be my favorite Halloween decoration. What is yours?

Happy Homemaking!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house.
