The Rockefeller Estate

Back in May my mom and I visited the Rockefeller Estate, but I never got the chance to share the pictures with you.

If you would like to read the whole history of the property, which is massive, I recommend reading the Wikipedia page. If you are ever in Westchester, then you should definitely visit the estate. It is expensive, but the guided tour is well worth it. Could you imagine living here?

The grounds are spectacular. Nelson Rockefeller was very interested in art, and the grounds are covered with artistic treasures. Brancusi, Picasso, Sargent, Warhol… the list is quite long.

It is not permitted to take pictures inside of the house, but I was able to find some online. My favorite was the room lined with Picasso tapestries.

The house is not nearly as impressive as the gardens.

The views of the Hudson River are also spectacular. I would not mind seeing this from my bedroom.

The grounds also contain a nine hole reversible golf course and a playhouse with indoor and outdoor pools, tennis and basketball courts. I would have loved to see those, but they are only accessible to the family who still live on the property.

We did get to see the garage. If you have a non-profit that meets certain criteria, you can hold a conference on the property and stay in the apartments above the garage.

This time we did the shorter tour, but my mother has already stated that she wants to go back and do the “Grand Tour.” She hates to spend money, so you know that it was an interesting place to visit.

Last Monday I wrote about Stone Barns, which is an extension of the Rockefeller Estate.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. So that’s where Brancusi’s “Bird” is! The view of the Hudson in the haze is just like the Hudson River School paintings. This looks like a fascinating place to explore … I’ll add it to our list! Thanks for the armchair tour!

    • It was not high on my list of places to visit. I only went because my mother wanted to, but I am really glad that I did. I will have to see the Newport summer cottages someday.
