Thrift Shop Nativity
A couple of weeks ago, a friend asked me to go to the Cherry Door thrift shop in Tarrytown with her. I did not plan to buy anything. I am sure you can guess how that turned out. A nativity scene caught my eye. I certainly did not plan to buy a crèche, but I really liked this guy.
He was with nine other figurines in this homemade manger.
These three were obviously not part of the set. I told the lady that I did not want them thinking that they could sell them to someone else, but she insisted that I take them.
When I got home, I took the picture off the back of the manger. It just did not look right, but I was sad that I had to damage it to take it off. It was obviously old. I like that the manger has a light.
When I got home, I researched the figurines that were part of a set. It turns out that they are Josef Originals and can be worth a lot of money. You can see a set here and here. Everything, the seven Josef Originals figurines, the three others and the manger, cost me $20. Douglas was a little annoyed by my purchase until he found out that they might be worth a lot more. However, I like the set and plan to display it – not sell it.
I did decide that the camel could stay. The cow and the angel were just too ugly.
Here is the nativity at night.
Happy Christmas!
I think that first little wise man looks like a wise woman. Must be the eyelashes! 🙂 The set looks cool with the light on at night. My parents made a nice stable/manger when I was a little kid … wonder where that went? Did I sell it or is it in the attic archives?
The eyes are the cutest. I also like the purple robe. Why couldn’t one of the wise men have been a woman in disguise?
Very sweet. I collect crèches but I don’t have one like this. Good buy. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music.
I enjoy having it on the bookcase.
I love it! I agree about the cow and angel – they had to go. But the camel adds a nice touch 🙂
Now I just have to figure out what to do about the other two.
