Tulum, México

On Thursday, June 16, we spent some time at the beach and enjoyed the antics of a coati family before heading to downtown Playa del Carmen to take a Mexican History class. Can you spot all of the little baby coati?

El jueves 16 de junio, pasamos tiempo en la playa y divertimos los juegos de una familia de coatí antes de ir al centro de Playa del Carmen para tomar una clase en la historia mexicana. ¿Puedes encontrar todos los bebés de los coatíes en esta foto?

As per our request, our Mexican History class turned more into a Mexican Current Events class. We felt that would be more relevant for us, and our teacher was happy to oblige. I really appreciated the lesson, as I know very little about Mexican politics.

Porque se lo pedimos, nuestro profesor cambió la clase de una de la historia mexicana a una de los eventos recientes. Pensábamos que sería más útil para nosotras y el profesor estaba feliz de cumplir. Apreciaba la lección porque de verdad sé muy poco de la política mexicana.

The next day we went to Tulum. Unfortunately, our guide for this trip left a lot to be desired, and I learned very little. I mostly wandered around on my own taking pictures while he was giving the tour.

El día siguiente fuimos a Tulum. Desafortunadamente, nuestro guía de ese viaje no era tan bueno como los que teníamos en Chichén Itzá y aprendí muy poco. Yo pasé el tiempo explorando por mi cuenta y sacando fotos mientras él daba el tour.

I took about three hundred pictures of lizards and birds. I just could not seem to stop. They were all so darn cute.

“In the Yucatec language, Tulum means “wall”, referring to the large barricade that surrounds the settlement. In the Mayan language, Tulum was called Zama, meaning “dawn,” an appropriate name given its eastern location. It seems “Tulum” is the name given to the site by explorers Stephens and Catherwood in 1841.”

En la lengua tucatec, Tulum significa “pared” y refiere al muro que rodea la ciudad. Tulum was the primary location for the Maya’s extensive trade network with both maritime and land routes converging here.”

Tulum remained inhabited about 70 years after the Conquest, when it was finally abandoned. Documentation of this demise can be found in the writings of Friar Diego de Landa’s Observations on the Yucatan Peninsula.”

Tulum también se consideraba un centro religioso de los curas con la protección de los muros para ellos. About halfway into our visit, it started to pour. My colleagues headed for shelter, but I decided to make the most out of my trip despite the rain. There wasn’t any way that I was going to stay dry, so I embraced the wet and enjoyed the fact that I could appreciate the ruins mostly by myself since everyone else was attempting to shelter from the rain.

Con la mitad de la visita todavía para ocurrir, empezó a llover muy, pero muy fuerte. Mis colegas corrieron a refugiarse, pero yo decidí aprovechar la visita a pesar de la lluvia. It made for a long, cold bus ride back to the hotel, but at least I enjoyed my time in Tulum.

That afternoon the rain refused to stop, and I spent most of it on the balcony of our room observing another family of coati scamper through the trees.

I also took more pictures of birds.

If you are planning a trip to the Yucatan Peninsula, I highly recommend that you visit Tulum. Next time, I would like to go out on a boat so that I can view the ruins from the sea.
