What’s Your Opinion… on Couch Color?

Everyone likes to give their opinion, right? Some people like to give it even when they are not asked, so I am hoping that you will all come through when I am telling you that I need your help. I have spoken about our “new” circular sofa and chaise lounge before (here and here), and you know that I would like to reupholster them. Here is a picture of the couch.  Update: The Craigslist Circular Couch has since been reupholstered!

And here is the chaise. Update: The chaise has since been reupholstered!

I have always loved red velvets couches and would love to have either one or both covered in red velvet. This could be because my parents had a red velvet couch and love seat when I was growing up. I also have a lot of red accents throughout the house. However, I already started making red velvet cushions for this chair, and by chance that would be too much red velvet in the room. Is that even a possibility?

After I dismissed the idea of red velvet, my first thought was to use a very dark purple velvet on the sofa and a printed purple velvet on the chaise. The problem is that I have searched exhaustively, and these fabrics do not seem to exist or are very difficult to find in my price range. Perhaps there is a dearth of royalty these days because purple does not seem to be a very “in” color, at least not with fabric producers. So, now I am not sure. I could redo them both in the same purple velvet. I could do them in coordinating purple velvets. Or I could go back to the original red velvet idea. I am sorry that I am not adept at Photoshop and cannot give you a visual idea of what they would look like in the different colors. You will just have to use your imaginations the old-fashioned way.

Sooooooo, I need your help. What do you think? If you were me, what fabric would you use on the couch and chaise?

Happy Homemaking!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. I love the idea of a red velvet couch and chaise! If you want to keep the red theme but break up the color a little, maybe a red and gold pattern on one of the pieces?

  2. I cannot wait to see it in person. How about a varigated pattern that has different shades of red. Maybe a touch of gold or purple (my favorite color)….

    • I like how you think. I also thought that something with red and purple would be perfect, but I have not been able to find that either. 🙁

Also, we spoke with Doug about you and Jack staying here when the baby is born, and we would love to have you. I cannot guarantee that the couches will be reupholstered by then, though!

  3. A red velvet couch sounds stunning! If you have always loved them, then by all means go for it. You have some good opinions in this post already. Splurge on the fabric of the accent pillows maybe (?) There is the rare chance you will find fabric from a dress (etc.) that has been worn once – try ebay or a consignment shop. I’ve had some beautiful dresses as a bridesmaid that I wore for only a few hours. Good luck!

    • I have, but I don’t want a light color, there is too much brown in the room and black seems too dark. That is why I was leaning toward a solid color, especially for the big couch, because I thought that it would be more neutral that way.
