A Weekend in September
After a month of neglecting our yard, we finally did some work outside. I am too embarrassed to even show you the before pictures, well in all honesty I did not even take any. Let’s just say that before the grass was mowed, it just about hid the kayak. Thank goodness Douglas got that done before the house got swallowed up by the jungle.
While he was mowing, I cleaned out the gardens. This one is looking a little bare now that the sunflowers are gone on this side. I need to buy some mums to fill it out a little.
The vegetable garden was the only area of the yard that had received any attention in the past five weeks. However, it also needed to be cleaned out some.
Bean production has slowed down but the tomatoes are still going strong. Besides that I am hoping that these melons will mature soon.
In the meantime, Menderes was helping Douglas move the mulch from the tree we took down last month. It was a lot of work, and Douglas really appreciated his help.
The yard looks much better now that the wood chips are hidden back in the bushes. We will use them in the gardens once everything dies back in the fall, but for now I am glad that the mulch pile is not the first thing I see when I exit the house anymore. The logs need to be taken to my mother’s house.
Before you accuse us of violating child labor laws and forcing Menderes into indentured servitude, I want to let you know that we also took him into New York City this weekend.
Together we explored the Financial District, and I took a lot of pictures of little things that caught my eye along the way.
We visited the National Museum of the American Indian. It was my first time there, and to be honest, I was not even aware that it existed before Saturday. It is part of the Smithsonian Institution and thus free.
Menderes saw his first turkey in Battery Park. It surprised me that there would be one there.
We also took the ferry to Staten Island and back. The views were not as nice as they normally are due to the rain, but we still were able to see the Statue of Liberty.
Our last stop was the Brooklyn Bridge. We walked about halfway across before the rain recommenced. Although the rain and fog hampered us a bit, it was an enjoyable day. Menderes is already planning his next visit to the big city.
I hope you enjoyed the weekend as well. Did you get everything done that you wanted to? Is that even possible?
Happy Homemaking!
I can’t wait to visit NYC (I haven’t been there since 1981), but it won’t be on our vacation list for a year or two.
I am looking forward to fall. Keeping the yard and gardens under control has wiped us out! UNCLE!!
When you come to NY you have to come visit. I can imagine that the yard work has been tough on you, especially since you are destroying and rebuilding a porch. That would wear anyone out! Poor Menderes’ back was sore yesterday from the shoveling.
What a busy weekend! It was nice to go to New York… It’s a dream city! And to answer your last question: not possible!
Glad I am not the only one to find that last question impossible! You will have to come visit us in NY someday.
I never get everything done on the weekend list. Last weekend I had to throw out the list I had made and start a new one due to backlog. As for the Big Apple, I haven’t been there in a few years and I miss a long weekend of theatre, theatre, cabaret, theatre . . . Expensive but worth it! Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
Good for you for starting over with a new list. Sometimes I feel so tied to my plans that I have a hard time admitting that they are not going to happen. I have not been to the theater for a few years either, and it is high time for me to go. I love it!
