Modani Back to School

Recently Modani, a modern furniture store specializing in contemporary and modern furniture, asked me to assemble a mood board using their furniture and other pieces to create a room for a college student. The idea was to think back to my first college apartment and think about what I would do differently now.

This idea was challenging for me for two reasons. The first is that I have never created a mood board. I do not design that way. The second is that my own college apartment was a nightmare collection of furniture that my roommate and I cobbled together. It was not something that anyone would inspire to. I am having trouble with my scanner right now, but I will show you pictures in the future if you promise not to laugh.

In the end, creating the mood board gave me the opportunity to vindicate my younger self by creating a room that I hope more people would appreciate. I myself love it and am ready to move in immediately. The best part was that I was able to pick everything that I adore without worrying about the price. It is all here: purple, a mirror, wood, plush pillows, beautiful artwork, an ant, a gorgeous chandelier. This is the room of my dreams, but the best part is that when I look back at my disastrous first apartment, I see the elements that appear on this mood board in a rougher form.

To give credit where it is due, here are my sources. This post is not sponsored in any way, although I am willing to accept kickbacks if anyone would like to give me any! These are all images that I chose because I loved the look.

The beautiful modern couch was the first piece that I chose from Modani. It is the Onyxia Sofa Bed in white. A sofa bed is a great piece for a college apartment, and this one is reasonable at $740. The shape and legs remind me of the couch my grandparents had when I was a child. Oh how I wish they had kept it!

Also from Modani, I chose this black Croco Armchair. It is pricier in my opinion at $290 but a beautiful addition to the room. I believe that every room should have a touch of black.Modani Croco armchair

Modani had several coffee tables that I liked a lot, but I felt that it was important to add some wood to the room to give it some warmth. This coffee table made from reclaimed wood by Peelroom goes perfectly with the couch. Look at how the legs match. There is no price listed, but I have a feeling that this piece goes for more than a thousand dollars. Good thing this is my dream room, and cost is no issue.

To bring the wood and chrome to the other side of the room, I chose a Milo Baughman dresser. It had already sold, and the price was not listed, but I love the look for the room. You could look for a similar style of dresser at a thrift shop or second hand store.

The purple rug is from Joss & Main Smythe Rug. If anyone is wondering what to buy me for Christmas, this would be it! It does not seem to be available any longer, but you could possibly find a similar one somewhere else.

Back on the Modani site, I had trouble deciding on a mirror for the room. They have so many that I love. Of course, you know I am crazy about mirrors, but trust me theirs are awesome! In the end I went for the Catena mirror in white at $340.

The Round Pintuck Pillow is from Urban Outfitters and only $34 or two for $60! I might have to buy a couple for real.

The purple floral pillow is from AliExpress and costs $51.90.

Ever since I visited their workshop in Venice, I have been dying to own a Murano glass chandelier. This dream room may be the only opportunity I have to “own” one, so I had to include it here. At $1798, I doubt that this one from Anthropologie is in the budget for most college students, but it is beautiful!

The final touch was the artwork. I am a believer that every room should have a bit of real art and when possible, bought from the artist directly. For that reason, I went straight to Etsy and searched “purple paintings”. Some of you know of my love for ants and will not be surprised that I chose this painting by Kathy Jurek. I have no connection to the artist, but I love her work. The best part is that she sells the digital downloads for only $5.

In the end, I enjoyed creating the mood board. The Modani social team will choose their favorites to post on their blog. Let’s hope mine gets chosen!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. You can read about my projects on my blog www.CapeofDreams.com

    • Thank you! Now I want it, but Douglas says that I need to build another room if I want to have it. Surprisingly, he liked the room as well. I thought that it would be too feminine, but I guess it wasn’t too girly.

  1. What a fun project! I can absolutely see your room! I especially like the sideboard–very sexy! And I have a pleated pillow like that, in aqua. Good luck with your mood board!

    • If only we had a room in which to recreate this. However, I love my circular couch and chaises too much to get rid of them. However, if I ever see a coffee table like that in real life, I am going to have to buy it immediately.
