Amaryllis by Night

Do you know the song “Amarillo by Morning” by George Strait? Whenever I hear it, I think of my days at the University of Oklahoma. These days, there is a lot of controversy surrounding my alma mater, which saddens me because I have a lot of good memories. I do have first hand knowledge of the racism at the SAE fraternity, though, so I am not sure why anyone was surprised by their actions. I was more surprised that they were not caught sooner, but I am deeply saddened that anyone would hold these beliefs in the twenty first century.

However, I did not intend this to be a post about the shortcomings of a group of college students. I wanted to write about my amaryllis that bloomed this morning.

Our next door neighbor gave us the bulb for Christmas. He has given us many plants over the years.

As I was taking these pictures, I started singing the song, but in my version I substituted Amarillo with Amaryllis. “Amaryllis by Morning” sounded good, but it is nighttime. Thus, the title of this post is “Amaryllis by Night.”

I apologize for the poor nighttime photos. I was up late grading papers, but I wanted to post something before I went to bed. (I will schedule this to publish tomorrow morning in case you are confused by the timing.)

Also, Douglas bought me this little statue last month. He wanted us to have a dog Buddha to go with the kitty Buddha.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Happy Homemaking!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. I didn’t know what to expect from that bulb, but I would have never guessed it would produce such large, spectacular flowers. Very impressive.

  2. I totally understand your sadness about your alma mater. I graduated from Penn State and when the catastrophe of child abuse surfaced and I learned how many “grown ups” over the years had turned a blind eye I was horrified. Good reputations take decades to develop but bad ones can arise is a moment. So sad. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

    • What a small world. I got my masters at Penn State. That story was much sadder. It is bad that people say racist things, but it is unforgivable to commit crimes against children. It is a shame that such a wonderful university would have allowed those things to go on. You are right that it will take a long time for them to rebuild that reputation.

  3. It is a sad week for Norman. And I wish Boren would respond in the same manner to the sexual assaults on campus and at fraternities. Your flowers though, they are stunning! XoxoxoX miss you!

  4. Pretty amaryllis! Eric used to tease me about growing Christmas amaryllis for Valentine’s day. Last year he saved our bulb and took it to work. It’s blooming again!! Your doggy Buddha made us both laugh!

Yes, sad about U of O … even sadder that you know the accusations to be true. But maybe now that it’s out, things will change.

    • I did not even plant mine in time for Valentine’s Day. I guess that makes it a St. Paddy’s Day amaryllis!

Things have already changed because that fraternity has been shut down. Not a moment too soon in my opinion.
