Donating Hair – Donando el pelo

Cancer is a deadly disease, and in our modern world, we still have not found a cure. This illness effects nearly everyone. I do not know anyone that has not known at least one person that has suffered the ravishing devastation of this malady.

For many the effects of the cure are almost worse than the disease itself. Losing your hair due to chemotherapy can be a traumatic experience. In fact, for some losing hair is more distressing than losing breasts. After all breasts are easier to fake. That was the reason that my dear friend John started donating his hair. A good friend of his was devastated by the loss of her hair from cancer treatment.

He donated for the first time about seventeen years ago. I admired his selflessness for many years before deciding to donate myself. Since 2005 I have donated four times. John has donated a total of twelve times or just over one full wig, since they say that it takes an average of eleven donations to make a hair piece. Here are his most recent before and after pictures with his dog LeaH. This time he donated to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths campaign.

All of my donations and many of John’s have been to Locks of Love. According to their website, “Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.”

I do not have any before or after pictures of my first couple of donations. My most memorable donation was shortly after Douglas and I got married. I grew my hair out for several years before the wedding. Here is a picture of my father walking me down the aisle.

Dad walking me down the aisle

Mere weeks after that date, my hair was driving me crazy. For years I had wanted to try shaving my head but had been too timid to go through with it. Finally, I decided that it was time. I boldly walked into the living room with Douglas’ clippers in hand and asked him to shave my head. You can well imagine how a newly married man might be averse to doing so, but he was caught in a catch 22. He had to risk my anger at his failing to do what I had asked of him or risk that I would be mad at him for actually doing it if I were to change my mind. Luckily for him, I never regretted my decision. I am not sure that I would ever do it again, but I am glad that I tried it once. I did not go completely bald. He used the longest setting of the clippers.

No estaba completamente calva.

Me with short hair July 2012

Since July of 2012, my hair has been growing rapidly. It is hard to believe that it had gotten to this length so quickly. I guess I have healthy hair!

As my hair is curly, you really cannot even tell how long it really was.

Last weekend I was down in Maryland visiting family and asked my cousin to cut my hair for me so that I could donate again. Sorry for the bad pictures, but I forgot my camera. The beautiful pregnant lady is my cousin Sara, and if you live near Frederick, Maryland, I highly recommend that you visit her for a haircut.

There was a lot of hair to donate! I hope that some girl’s life is improved just a bit by my gift. It is the least I can do. As for me, I am going to save a ton of money on shampoo, if I can just remember to stop using so much!

I am thrilled with my new haircut. No disrespect to Douglas, but this style is much more becoming than the one that my loving husband gave me.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Since none of you were there, you can only guess what happened when she came to me with those damn clippers. I argued, I refused, argued some more, pleaded, begged, argued, refused pleaded… This went on for quite a while before I gave in. I’m almost drew up a contract for her to sign swearing that she forced me to do it against my will and that she would not hold me responsible for the outcome. I did finally give in, and slept with one eye open for the next month…

  2. I noticed in some of your recent pix how long and pretty your hair was. Good for you for donating it! What a loving gesture. Your new haircut is really cute–perfect for your curls. This is something not everyone can do. My hair is wimpy and fine, so I can’t grow it long enough to donate. Btw, your friend’s LeaH is adorable!!

    • My cousin is a genius with hair! She knows exactly the perfect style every time. LeaH is a newly adopted pet, and I still have not had the fortune to meet her. Hopefully it will happen soon. Did you hear that, John?

  3. Love your new cut and especially the reason for it. By the time I considered donating my hair it had been colored (for decades) and so was unsuitable. I’ve been trying to talk my son, who has gorgeous hair, into letting his grow for this reason. I don’t think he’s convinced. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

  4. cute. i just saw on facebook, though, that locks for love actually charges people for the donated hair?!?! the people who posted that recommended another organization, but i didn’t take note. just fyi. your new do is perfect for the summer months!

    • That is not true!!! I hate when people post lies about charities. I donate the hair directly to them, and all they request is my name and address. I actually prefer long hair in the summer so that it is not on my neck, but I think that it will be long enough to put in a small ponytail by the time it gets really hot. Also, I am thinking that it might snow this summer because the weather has been so crazy.

  5. what a wonderful thing to do! i know a few people who always donate their hair to locks of love. you look beautiful with long and with short hair. your beautiful locks will make someone very happy.

  6. Quite a generous thing to do, but organizations like Iocks of love sell the hair for a couple dollars per ponytail, and they get way more than they can use. I give blood and enrolled in the marrow donor program. I hate needles, but blood saves lives, so I roll up my sleeves.

    • Donating marrow and blood are excellent. I am O- blood type, the universal donor, and should donate more than I do. However, I still believe that it is important to donate hair. Locks of Love is transparent about the fact that they sell hair that they do not use, but that money is used to run the charity. I do not see anything wrong with that. They give thousands of wigs every year to children that could not afford them on their own. I feel lucky to be a part of it.

  7. It’s funny because I saw a report on TV recently about a hairdresser in a nearby town that keeps hair for an association of women fighting cancer. I’m considering helping, but I would never dare go as short as you. But your post is definitely encouraging.
