ESMA, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Saturday, July 02 was one of the saddest days of my life for Sofi and I visited ESMA (La Escuela Superior de la Mecánica de la Armada). I think that my visits to Dachau, Germany and the Island of Gorée in Senegal are the only experiences that could even compare. The atrocities that were committed at these three sites are devasting to imagine, and of the three, the horrors at ESMA were those that occurred most recently and with the aid of the United States government. Perhaps that is why it affected me so much.

El sábado 02 de julio fue uno de los días más tristes de mi vida porque Sofi y yo visitamos ESMA (La Escuela Superior de la Mecánica de la Armada). Mis visitas a Dachau, Alemania y la Isla de Gorée en Senegal son las únicas experiencias de mi vida que se comparan. Las atrocidades que se cometieron en esos tres lugares son devastadores de imaginar y de los tres los horrores de la ESMA son los más recientes y ocurrieron con la ayuda del gobierno de los Estados Unidos. A lo mejor fue por eso que me fue tan difícil.

I am no expert, and therefore I do not want to explain Argentina’s Dirty War, but I would recommend that you investigate further. I wanted to visit in order to learn more. I felt sorry for taking Sofi with me. It was extremely painful for her as well, and it was not her idea to go there.

No soy experta y por eso no quiero explicar mucho de la Guerra Sucia de Argentina, pero recomiendo que investigues más. Aprender más fue el propósito de mi visita, pero arrepiento de haber traído a Sofi. Fue muy difícil para ella también y ella no había querido ir.

ESMA started out as a Naval Academy – the Superior School of Mechanics of the Navy, but in the 1970’s it became a prison for people who expressed different political views from the military dictatorship. The cold, dreary rain added to the gloomy feel of our visit.

ESMA empezó como academia naval – Escuela Superior de la Mecánica de la Armada, pero en los años 1970 se convirtió en cárcel para las personas que expresaron unas ideas políticas diferentes que las de la dictadura militar. La lluvia fría y lúgubre añadieron al sentimiento sombrío de nuestra visita.

The buildings and grounds would be beautiful if you did not know the history behind them, but it would be hard to get in without knowing since there are reminders all around – paintings that people have made and memorials to the dead that have been erected.

Los edificios y terrenos serían bonitos si no supieras la historia de lo que ocurrió allí, pero sería difícil entrar sin enterarse de nada porque hay recuerdos por todas partes – pinturas que la gente ha hecho y monumentos a los muertos que han instalado.

Inside we walked along the front of the grounds to reach the building that houses the museum. It was the only building that we entered that day. By the time we had finished the guided tour, we were both emotionally drained and needed to decompress.

Adentro caminamos por la frente de los terrenos para llegar al edificio que contiene el museo. Fue el único edificio en que entramos ese día. Al terminar el tour estábamos tan agotadas que sólo queríamos sentarnos un rato para descansar un poco.

The tour started out with a short video and a written explanation of what happened there and why. Below you can see in Spanish a description of the United States’ involvement in the affair.

El tour empezó con un video corto y una explanación escrita de lo que pasó allí y por qué. Abajo puedes ver una descripción en español de la participación de los Estados Unidos en los eventos.

Next we went up to the area where the cells used to be. They have since been removed, but it was a solemn place none-the-less. As the guide explained what life was like for the young men and women imprisoned there, my skin started to crawl. There were a couple of videos of survivors telling of their own experiences. I started to cry as I listened to them. We were in a group of about ten people, and hardly anybody said a thing throughout the hour that we spent there.

Después subimos al área de las celdas. Ya no están, pero fue un lugar solemne de todos modos. Mientras el guía explicaba lo que había pasado allí, sentía un hormiguero en la piel. Había unos videos donde los sobrevivientes explicaban sus experiencias en la cárcel. Empecé a llorar mientras los escuchaba. Estábamos en un grupo de unas diez personas, pero nadie dijo casi nada durante la hora que pasamos allí.

Sofi had to excuse herself for a moment when we reached the rooms where women gave birth to babies only to have them taken away immediately to be adopted by members of the regime. It was heartbreaking to think of those poor girls that would never see their own children, the families that were torn apart and the fact that few of those young women lived to leave the prison themselves.

Sofi tuvo que excusarse por un momento cuando llegamos a los cuatros donde las mujeres daban a luz a unos críos sólo para que se los quitaran inmediatamente para darles a adoptar a los miembros del régimen. Fue devastadora pensar en esas pobres muchachas que no verían nunca a sus bebés, las familias que se dividieron y el hecho que pocas de esas mujeres sobrevivieron para salir de la cárcel.

In several of the rooms, prisoners had drawn on the walls. The drawings were covered in an attempt to preserve them, but replicas were placed next to them. It reminded me of the carvings in the walls of the Tower of London.

En algunos de los cuartos los prisioneros habían dibujado en las paredes. Los dibujos estaban cubiertos para preservarlos, pero hubo réplicas al lado. Me hacía recordar los dibujos esculpidos en las paredes de la Torre de Londres.

In the attic there were pictures on the walls of the possessions that were stolen from the people imprisoned at ESMA. The sale of these articles funded military operations of the time.

En el ático había fotos en las paredes de las posesiones que se robaron de la gente encarcelada en la ESMA. La venta de esas cosas fundó las operaciones militares del momento.

In the basement we heard of the torture that was inflicted there and how the kidnapped were drugged and loaded into airplanes to be dropped into the river or the ocean. The place seemed haunted by the spirits of the dead.

En el sótano escuchamos de la tortura que se infligió allí y como los desaparecidos se endrogaban y se montaban en aviones para estar tirados en el Río de la Plata o el océano Atlántico. El lugar parecía estar poseído por los espíritus de los muertos.

I cannot even describe to you all of the horrors that I learned throughout the tour. I had already read a lot about the Dirty Wars in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, but visiting the jail made it much more real to me. It is horrifying to think that many of those that committed those acts are still walking free in society.

No puedo describir todos los horrores de que aprendí ese día. Ya había leído bastante sobre las guerras sucias de Chile, Uruguay y Argentina, pero visitar la prisión me lo hizo mucho más real para mí. Es horroroso pensar que mucha de la gente que cometió esas atrocidades todavía anda libre por la sociedad.

After we left ESMA we found a coffee shop to sit for a while and decompress. We were silent for a long time before we could talk again. That evening we went to my friend Miguelito’s for dinner. Enjoying a meal with him and his boyfriend, Brian, brought our spirits back up. It is important to study the past and to learn from it, but we need to live in the present and appreciate the good things in life. We laughed a lot that evening, and it was just what we needed after such a sad day.

Después de salir de la ESMA encontramos un café para sentarnos un rato y descansar. Pasó un buen rato antes de poder volver a hablar. Esa tarde fuimos al apartamento de mi amigo Miguelito para cenar. Disfrutar la comida con él y su novio, Brian, nos mejoró el estado de ánimo. Es importante estudiar la historia para aprender de ella, pero necesitamos vivir en el presente y apreciar las buenas cosas de la vida. Nos reímos mucho esa noche, y fue exactamente lo que nos hacía falta después de un día tan triste.
