February Mantels – Los estantes en febrero

One of the things that I hate about taking down the Christmas decorations is how empty the house seems. Everything seems cozy and cheerful during the holidays and then cold and blank in January. After three weeks, I knew that it was time to do something about the blank space.

Una de las cosas que odio de quitar los adornos de la Navidad es que la casa se ve tan vacía. Todo es tan acogedor y calentito durante las pascuas y después frío y aséptico en enero. Después de tres semanas, yo sabía que tenía que hacer algo con el espacio hueco.

Everything looks better with books, and this is an easy look to accomplish in this house where the books outnumber all of the other objects combined. I like easy, so I went downstairs and grabbed a bunch of hardback books that were the same height. Those were my only criteria. A couple more plants added life to the shelf.

Todo se ve mejor con libros, y es fácil alcanzar este estilo en esta casa donde hay más libros que todos los otros objetos combinados. Me gustan las cosas fáciles así que bajé a buscar unos libros de pasto duro y el mismo tamaño. Esos eran los únicos criterios. La adición de unas plantas de dio más vida al estante.

Here is a closer look at the books I chose. It drives me crazy when I see books on blogs and cannot read the titles. I like to see if I have read at least one of the books. As I said before, there really is no connection between them other than size. It is as diverse a collection as you could imagine.

Aquí se pueden ver los libros más de cerca. A mí me molesta cuando no puedo leer los títulos de los libros que veo en las casas en internet. Me gusta ver si he leído al menos uno de los libros. Como ya dije, de verdad no hay ninguna conexión entre estos libros con la excepción del tamaño. Es el grupo más diverso que se puede imaginar.

The top of the other bookcase was not as bare as the first. There was still a bit of Christmas hanging around over there. Should I be embarrassed that it took me until January 31 to take it all down?

La parte superior del otro estante no estaba tan vacía. Todavía había un poco de Navidad allí. ¿Yo debería tener vergüenza de que no había quitado todo hasta el treinta y uno de enero?

I put the Christmas decorations away, but I decorated with Christmas gifts.

The “I Run NY” sign was a gift to Douglas from one of his athletes.

My soon to be sister in law made the New York string art for us.

The slate chalkboard was a gift from my brother and sister in law. The chalk smudged while I was putting it up, but I thought that it looked like swirling snow, so I left it.

La pizarrita fue un obsequio de mi hermano y cuñada. La tiza borroneó mientras la estaba instalando, pero me hace pensar en la nieve arremolinándose, y lo dejé así.

The pictures in the glass were a part of the Christmas decorations that I never got to tell you about. They came from last year’s Tiffany’s holiday catalog. Since the illustrations are mostly winter scenes with little reference to Christmas other than the trees, I decided to keep them up until spring.

Los dibujos en los vidrios formaban parte de los adornos de Navidad que no había mencionado antes. Vinieron del catálogo de las Pascuas de la tienda de Tiffany’s. Como la mayoría de las ilustraciones son de unas escenas de invierno en general y no tienen más referencia a las Navidades que los árboles, decidí dejarlos hasta la primavera.

As always it’s the little things that make a house feel like a home.

Como siempre son las cosas pequeñas que hacen un hogar de una casa.
