House Tour 2018 – Tour de casa

Normally, I post the house tour in the beginning of August to commemorate my blogiversary or the anniversary of starting this blog. This year I was busy driving across the country with Douglas, a six year old and a three year old. We took them up to Lake Placid, then over to Rochester, Batavia, Niagara Falls (NY), Toledo (OH), Coldwater (MI), Edwardsville (IL), St. Louis (MO), Boilingbrook (IL), Coldwater (again) and back home. It was an adventure, but we had a wonderful time. The boys behaved well and loved the experience. Here they are having fun with cousins.

I took a lot of pictures for the house tour when we returned in August, but I forgot to take a picture of the front of the house until this weekend, so here is the front yard in late September. I am still loving the green house with the standout purple door. We did more flowers on pots on the front stoop this year. I did not think that they would get enough light to survive, but they did.

There is a new doormat in the entryway. It used to be in the living room, but I think that it is better here.

There have been a lot of changes in the living room. We had the room painted a light pink, and for the first time since I moved in at the end of January 2010 the walls and trim are all installed and painted. I love it. We also changed the position of the furniture and bought new curtains. I also installed new shelves, but I never wrote about them. I still need to figure out what is going to go on the blank wall next to the new shelves. There are also new curtains.

The hallway looks better now that the living room is painted. Can you see the wooden strip on the wall between the closet and bedroom doors? It is an old piece of trim that I nailed to the wall to track the boys growth. Some of their artwork is also taped to their bedroom door.

The bedroom was freshly painted after the fiasco with the insulation, but I never rehung the artwork. Also, one of my plants died, another was taken to the back porch and the lingerie chest was moved into the corner where Kahlua’s bed used to be. There are new curtains.

The boys’ bedroom is the most changed of all naturally. You saw the changes that I made before they arrived, but since they have been living in the room things have changed even more. We added another cabinet to store their toys, and Douglas hung some art and some of their schoolwork on the walls.

We hung a new light fixture in the bathroom and added a stool (plastic milk crate with a rug thrown on top) for the boys to reach the sink. Other than that everything is the same including the patches on the walls and ceiling.

Going back down the hallway in the other direction, the most noticeable differences are the ones in the living room. I also re-framed the picture of Sambucca that was under the picture of Freckles the Freak, but the cleaning lady knocked it off the wall and broke it, and I still have not fixed it.

There are new curtains in the dining room. We brought back the rectangular table, because we are hoping to have the round one refinished and have a leaf made for it. Douglas had it in the back of his truck for months before moving it into a storage area at work and has yet to bring it to the shop.

I did not style the kitchen at all before I took pictures. If you look closely enough you will see little things all over the place that are not where they belong. The front of the refrigerator is also a mess.

The sofa on the back porch is new, but we have not been able to use it properly. This area has been a mess. To take this uncluttered picture, I threw everything out onto the yard, and then brought it all back up and threw it on the sofa and floor. This is an embarrassment. I would like to be able to use the porch, but we can never seem to keep it clear of clutter. We did bring a storage container that was unused at the back of the property to the side of the porch to contain the boys’ outdoor toys, but it has not helped much.

Me da vergüenza.

The yard has also been neglected this year, but Douglas mowed it right before I took this picture. The day before S, the older of the boys, told me that he loved the grass this way because the yard looks like a jungle. The garden is a pathetic mess and did not produce much this year. We were away for too long this summer, but we do not regret our trip.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. You can read about my projects on my blog www.CapeofDreams.com

  1. It all looks pretty good to me. Isn’t it a joy to have some of those big projects done? Your trip sounds like a good one and much better to have those memories than vegetables that might not have done well even if you were home.

    • I would not trade that trip for anything. We had so much fun, and the house survived without us! Having the painting done in the living room is the biggest relief of all. It always bugged me that it wasn’t done. Now if I can just get the bathroom finished.

  2. Great house tour! Your house ALWAYS looks good! I don’t notice anything out of place, all the rooms look wonderful. You are always too hard on yourself. Glad you had a wonderful trip with the boys and that they got to see their cousins. Happy Fall!

    • Happy Fall to you too! I am glad that I am the only one that sees those little things in my house. I am really happy that I did not go back through and redo all the pictures like I was tempted to do. Sometimes it pays to be lazy!

  3. I love your house! The paint in the living room really helped pull everything together. I didn’t notice anything out of place, either–in fact, it all looked perfect to me. Except for one thing: I couldn’t find Crème and Ponche in any of the pictures!
Glad to see a post from you … you’ve sure been busy!

    • Creme and Ponche were several of the rooms when I photographed them, but they moved toward the camera when I pulled it out. It is very strange that they have started to do that. I hope that it doesn’t mean I won’t get as many pictures of them.
