Kitchen Cabinet – Gabinete de cocina
Our town has a “Buy Nothing” Facebook page. People post things that they are giving away, and others can express an interest. We have obtained several things this way, like sleds and arugula. Back in August I saw a post for this cabinet. It was exactly what I had been looking for. I requested it and received confirmation that it would be mine. I was given an address and Douglas went to pick it up.
When he got there, he was greeted by the owner of the house, who claimed to have no knowledge that we had been told that we could have it. He told Douglas that he would have to speak to his wife. Douglas left our contact information and came home. When we did not hear from them for a couple of days, I was sure that the cabinet was gone. I was frustrated because it was the exact width that I needed, and after two years of searching eBay and Craigslist, I knew how rare that width was.
Finally, we got a call that the cabinet was on the side of the road. Douglas left immediately hoping that no one picked it up before he got there. Luckily, it was still there and soon in our home.
The condition of the cabinet was not as good as we would have liked, but we thought that we could make it work.
Crème gave it her approval, so we had no option but to start working on it.
I began painting it almost immediately. I did not finish for four months. That does not mean that I was painting it for four months. It means that I gave it the first three coats and then let it sit for four months before applying the fourth and final coat. I never expected it to take so many.
In December, after I applied the last coat of paint, Douglas put steel plates in the corners on the back of the cabinet in order to strengthen it.
Then, it was hung in the kitchen, so that we could move the smaller cabinet to the bathroom. However, I never did finish the door, so that remained on the to-do list.
Yesterday, the time had come to finally check this task as completed. I needed to scrape the paint off of the glass. As I scratched away, I cursed myself for not using tape. I remember making the decision to paint quickly and not worry about exactness. I thought that the paint would easily scrape off, and it probably would have had I done it right away and not let it cure for six months.
After getting the paint off of the glass, I turned my attention to the hinges. I hate painted hinges.
I let them boil for an hour and then tried to scrape the paint off. It did not come off easily, so Douglas used steel wool. Usually the boiling alone does the trick. Just remember if you ever do this to use a pot that will never be used for food.
Now the cabinet is on the wall, with its door attached and looking pretty good, if I do say so myself. I am pleased to say that this task is finally complete. What should I work on next?
Happy Homemaking!
¡Que todos sus sueños caseras se cumplan!
Don’t forget that before you painted it you had me cut off that big lip at the base of it so that it was more flush with the rest of the cabinet.
I remembered. I just did not have any pictures of that so I left it out of the story. Sorry!
What a perfect fit! That’s a lucky little cabinet to be rehabbed and hung on your wall instead of being kicked to the curb. If you don’t have any projects ready right now, you could fly out and work on my house!! 🙂
I have lots of projects that I should be working on. I just cannot seem to get started.
Your persistence has paid off. It is so satisfying to take someone else’s cast off and recreate it into the perfect thing. Good teamwork there. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
It is the perfect size. I am so glad that we finally got it and put it up.
Lovely, fits so nicely, sparkles next to the mint green paint.
Thank you.
It looks great, Jessica! And so much better with the door on now. Don’t you love it when you wait so long for the perfect item, and it all works out. Patience is worth it, just to know every time you look at that cabinet, how rare a find it was.
Me, I’m having a hiatus from my blog for a few months while I put together a new website. I’ll let you know when I’m done!
Love your work.
I can’t wait to see what you are up to. I’ve missed you.
It is wonderful when you find the perfect piece, especially when it is something reused and not new from a store.
wow!!! amazing fit, and so lucky no one had picked it up off the curb. they are terrible sellers! but at least you got it in the end! and it looks beautiful after it’s rehab.
Well, at least they were not trying to sell it. They were giving it away, but still they should have been more cooperative.
