Kitchen Progress

Well, I am sure that the other bloggers participating the kitchen renovation dual are kicking my butt. We are in a holding pattern here at the Cape of Dreams. This is the list of what we need to do to finish the kitchen. We have not crossed anything else off since we removed the counters last week.

  • Remove the countertops (view post)
  • Install new countertops
  • Move electrical outlet
  • Tile the backsplash
  • Patch wall
  • Paint
  • Paint door
  • Caulk moldings
  • Polish cabinets
  • Polish hardware
  • Reconfigure cabinet storage
  • Clean everything well and put it back

Last week, the company, Unico, was coming to make a template for our countertop. That is why we had to take the counters out. We detached them from the cabinets but did not remove them until the morning that we were expecting the people from Unico. We were upset to find more holes behind the backsplash attached to the counters.

The amount of dust that had been trapped behind those backsplashes was also disgusting. Why do people ever install those? I prefer a backsplash that is attached to the wall. At least this was easy to clean once the counter was removed.

The templates did not take long. I think that it took less than half an hour.

They wanted to take our sink. We wanted to use our sink for the next two weeks. Luckily, we still had the old one down in the basement. It is identical other than the color, so they took that one.

After they made the templates, Douglas put the counters back in temporarily.

He hooked up the dishwasher and sink so that we could use them for the next couple of weeks.

He put tape on the seam of the counters to keep the grossness out. Or maybe it was for style. It looks great, doesn’t it?

Then, he realized that we no longer had access to the holes we need to patch. Oops. So, this is what our kitchen looks like now. Actually worse than it did before we started! The new counters are scheduled to be installed next week. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

About

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. I had the nasty behind-the-backsplash issues too. Only mine had long-term STAINS on those parts of the wall because the former owner of my house was not always physically able to keep the house in clean, working condition. Thus insects. And what they leave behind apparently stains drywall. Fun.

So (apart from that downer), excited for your new counters!

    • Sarah, thank you for stopping by. I think that we had a similar situation in our home. We bought the house from the estate of an elderly gentleman that had passed away. A lot of repairs had been deferred in recent years.

I was also excited about my counters, but we ran into another snafu this morning. 🙁 I am keeping my optimism up and hoping that everything will turn out alright. Meanwhile, I am biting my nails to the quick. Hope things are going more smoothly at the Ugly Duckling!
