Painting Outdoor Furniture from the Trash
In 2008 I found this white cast iron chair on the curb in the neighborhood where I was living at the time. I made an attempt to sand off the rust at that time, but quickly gave up on it. My intention was to find someone that could sand blast and powder coat it for me, but I never got around to it. In the meantime, it made two moves with me and had been sitting on the back porch of the Cape of Dreams since I moved here in 2010.
In the fall of 2012, Douglas found the bench in this picture on the curb near our house. I had actually passed two of them that morning and debated asking him to go back for them. I decided that they needed too much work and left them. By the time Douglas saw them later that day, the one that had been in better condition was already taken, leaving us with the one that was in need of the most work. Since then, it has been sitting in the back yard falling into even further disrepair.
Then, two months ago, Douglas picked the three nesting tables from the trash. They are cute, but very rusty.
I finally got around to getting a quote for powder coating. In the end, I decided that it was not worth having someone do the tables. I painted them myself with Rustoleum. Hopefully, this will be enough to keep them from rusting further, but if not, I will not be too distraught. They look pretty good for now.
The chair and the bench did go to get powder coated. It cost me $250, but I think that is worth it. We could have spent more than that for just a bench. The chair looks great. This was not the best light to show it off, but I was too lazy to take another picture at a better time. This chair is HEAVY!
It was also hard to take a good picture of the bench legs since they cannot stand up on their own. They are the perfect shade of purple in my opinion. Now we need to buy some slats and rebuild the bench. That will probably happen in the spring, so that the bench does not sit out in the weather over the winter.
I cannot recommend Chris from Evil Powder Coating highly enough. If you live in Westchester and need to have something powder coated, let him know that I sent you. I will not receive anything for my endorsement, but I like to help local businesses.
Happy Homemaking!
Love your powder-coated furniture. Have you seen the all but dead bench I refinished? https://charlieandjo.wordpress.com/2011/06/09/benched-in-with-the-new/ Now we keep it on the porch most of the time. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
I remember that bench from when I first started reading your blog. It was an inspiration for me. How is is holding up?
I love the design of the red chair! These two pieces will be outstanding when they get put together. I also need to find a sandblaster to clean up a pair of vintage lawn chairs that I want to paint myself … I think. They’d be pricey to powder coat, but I should get some quotes if I want this to happen. A project for next summer.
It was a little pricey, but I think that it was worth it. They will last a lot longer now. The guy that did it for me said that mostly what he charges for is the sandblasting. I guess that is the labor intensive part, and the painting is actually really easy and cheaper.
i love the chair color! it’s such a cool piece of furniture. love it! and the purple bench – so ornate and wonderful. looking forward to seeing it when it’s rebuilt!
I am anxious to see the bench as well. Hopefully, spring comes quickly.
