Passing on an Heirloom Table
As you know, last week we made the final decision to buy a different table for our narrow dining room and give the table that I inherited from my great grandmother to my cousin. As hard as it was to decide to give it away, we knew that it was not right for our room.
After my great grandmother passed away, my grandparents moved into what had been my great grandparents’ house. They brought most of their furniture with them including their dining room table. My great grandparents’ table went to live in my grandfather’s photography studio, where it was not treated with kindness.
There were a lot of scrapes and scratches on the table. The legs sustained the worst damage.
I decided that I would polish it up before I gave it to my cousin. I was working on my own table, so it did not take that much more time. I used my trusty combination.
The table looked a million times better when I was finished. It was not perfect, but unless you look closely, it is hard to tell. I wish that I had done this last year when we set the table up in our dining room!
Last week we loaded the antique into the truck, and on Friday we drove it down to Frederick, Maryland. By Saturday it was installed in my cousins’ dining room. Theirs is a little bigger than mine!
They just purchased this gorgeous old house and have begun renovations. They are thrilled to have the table.
Now, we are back at home and have recommenced the painting of the bathroom. Hopefully, I will soon have an update for you!
Happy Homemaking!
I am going to keep those 3 products in mind if/when I have wood to refinish. My Nana’s Hope Chest desparately needs re-finishing. But it has a veneer top, which needs to be sanded down. I need to do research before I’ll dare touch it! But the tables you’ve worked on look marvelous!!!
You can use these products on veneer. I have and obtained marvelous results. Give it a try before you do anything else. Sanding veneer is tricky.
I never realized how spectacular the legs of this table were until I saw them in the table’s new setting. Good and generous switcheroo. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
The table is beautiful from the side, but I could never take a picture from that angle in my little dining room. I am glad that my cousin wanted the table.
That table looks like it finally found its proper home! It’s beautiful in that space. Good for you and your cousin!
The table is going to be happy in its new home. 🙂
It looks a lot better and your cousin is so lucky you did all the work!
She gave me a free haircut in exchange. 🙂
