Penultimate Harvest – La penúltima cosecha
We were not good stewards of our garden this year. Since we were traveling a lot, the garden was left to fend for itself. Add to that the fact that it was one of the driest summers I have ever experienced, and you can imagine that we did not get much produce from our garden. But we did get more than anyone who does not plant at all! In the past couple of weeks, we scrounged what will be some of the last things we gather for the year. First, Douglas picked some tomatoes and the last of the peppers a couple of weeks ago to make salsa. It might not look like much, but it is delicious.
No fuimos buenos guardianes del huerto este año. Como estábamos viajando mucho y no llovió casi nada, las hortalizas no prosperaron. Pero ¡recibimos más que la gente que no siembra nada! En las últimas semanas, sacamos lo poco que quedaba allí. Primero, Douglas recogió unos tomates y los últimos chiles para hacer una salsa hace unas semanas. No se ve muy bonita, pero sabe riquísimo.
Then, I went out and picked a bunch of things last week. We did not get as many sweet potatoes as last year, but there are some good ones. Crème was really interested in these. She managed to pull one out of the bowl when I turned my back. I don’t think she liked the taste. I still need to cure the sweet potatoes so that we can eat them, but it is hard to find the time.
Después yo recogí un montón de cosas la semana pasada. No había tantas batatas como el año pasado, pero había unas buenas. A Crème le interesaban mucho y pudo sacar una cuando le di la espalda. Parece que no le gustó el sabor. Aún me hace falta curarlas, pero es difícil encontrar el tiempo para hacerlo.
There was a large bunch of arugula, but it had grown leggy. It took me foooorever to cut all of the usable leaves off of the stalks. I froze a bag for us to throw in things like scrambled eggs. I love wild arugula, and it has such a strong taste that a little bit goes a long way. We will get a lot of use out of this bag.
Había mucha rúcula, pero los tallos habían crecido demasiado y me tardó mucho cortar las hojas comestibles de los tallos. Puse una bolsa de rúcula en el congelador. Podemos sacarla poco a poco para poner en huevos revueltos y otras recetas. La rúcula silvestre tiene un sabor muy fuerte y sólo hay que usar un poquito, así que esta bolsa pequeña nos durará bastante tiempo.
Crème grew tired while trying to impede my progress with the arugula and found a spot on the other side of the kitchen where she could supervise my work from a more comfortable position. She really does not allow me to do anything without her approval.
Crème se cansó de intentar impedirme y encontró un sitio al otro lado de la cocina de donde podía observarme de una manera más relajante. De verdad no le gusta dejarme hacer cualquier cosa sin su aprobación.
I chopped all of the garlic chives and added some olive oil to the jar. Garlic chive infused olive oil will add something special to normal recipes.
Piqué los cebollinos de ajo y añadí aceite de olivo a la jarra. El aceite de olivo con una infusión de cebollinos será el toque extra en unos platos normales.
The eggplant, carrot and turnips will be used in recipes soon. The lavender was placed in a small vase to dry and the basil placed in water until I get the other ingredients to make pesto.
Usaremos la berenjena, la zanahoria y los nabos en unos platos pronto. La lavanda se puso en un vaso para secar y la albahaca se puso en agua para que yo haga pesto en cuanto compre los ingredientes que hacen falta.
There were not that many tomatoes left in the garden, and they were not as tasty as summer tomatoes, but I did not want them to go to waste. I threw them in the food processor with the carrot and turnip tops. They went into a bag as well and will be used to make soup this winter.
No quedaban muchos tomates en el huerto y los que estaba todavía no eran tan buenos como los del verano, pero no quería echarlos a perder. Los puse en el procesador con las hojas de los nabos y la zanahoria. Esto se puso en una bolsa en el congelador también para usar en una sopa un día cuando haga mucho frío. No hay nada mejor que una sopa caliente en un día de invierno.
You might notice that I said that this was the penultimate or second to last harvest. There are still some turnips in the ground, but they will stay there until we are ready to eat them. As they are a cold weather crop, they will be fine in there. We will probably continue to harvest sage and rosemary as well.
No sé si te diste cuenta pero dije que esta fue la penúltima cosecha del año. Todavía hay unos nabos en el huerto y allí permanecerán hasta que estemos listos para comerlos. Como les gusta el frío estarán bien allí. La salvia y el romero florecen en el frío también así que continuaremos cosechándolos por un buen rato.

You should be proud of yourself! We had plenty of tomatoes and some nice peppers, but did I even think of making salsa? Heck, no. Did I think of making soup stock? No. We harvested beets but I didn’t get around to blanching them quick enough and they went soft. I grabbed the last of the tomatoes but they rotted in my fridge. We left the Interlaken grapes on the vine! I will blame the house painting. I have to blame something!!

Well, there were things that went to waste in our garden as well. It takes a lot of time to care for the garden and to harvest, and time is the one thing that none of us has enough of! I freeze a lot because it is easier, and the food processor is essential?

It is amazing to think how much we would get if we actually tended it properly. I hate to throw food away, so it helps to be creative.
wow, that looks like quite a harvest to me! love how crème was so fascinated by the sweet potatoes. love her tongue sticking out in the last picture! i’m guessing ponche is not very interested in vegetables and left the supervision up to crème? great job paring everything down into usable baggies – i’m very impressed!
Ponche got involved as well, but he was less invasive and therefore easier to ignore. Now I feel badly that I did not take a picture of him.
